My truck is acting up
Ok I have a 2001 2 door with 4.3 auto. It has and FIPK on it underdrive pulleys and Flowmaster 40 series 2.5" pipe. I recently did a plugs and wires rotorcap and button and fuel filter replacement on it to try and fix the problem Im about to explain. About 2 years ago I noticed that at acceleration it was surging but noticed it mostly when the engine was wet such as after driving it on wet roads. The SES light would come on and stay on for about a day then go off. It would only come on every 3 or 4 weeks. So I took it and had the code reader put on it at Autozone. They said it was an O2 sensor. Well the problem disappeared and I didnt do anything about it. Well about 6 months ago I started getting a hiccup while at cruising speed. Thats when I did the tune up. It drives fine some days but really sh@tty some. I msinly do city driving within 3 to 9 miles a day. It s getting worse oh and it doesn't idle very smoothely either. Their is a slight pop in the exhaust. I ve been reading on here about the spider inj assy upgrade and was really wondering if this would be the best place to start or if I should just replace the O2 and the cat first and see if that fixes the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Oh yeah for the majority of the time that I ve had the truck I ve been running a hypertech power programmer on it using both the 87 and the 93 tune. Currently I dont have it on there because I keep waiting for the SES light to come on so I can have the trouble code run on it again. Finally, it turns over a lot before it will fire up. If I bump the key and let the engine turnover then reset the key and crank it, it fires right up. When its cold outside, I actually drained my battery trying to get it started because I hadn't figured this out yet. It has a good alt and a new battery. I have recently ran some "Lucas" fuel injection cleaner thru it and now I'm runnning "Seafoam" thru it. It has sputtered at all for now but I have done this in the past and it will most definitely start again. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: My truck is acting up
There is a lot that it *could* be, that is causing your problems. I had a similar problem like what I quoted from you. It wound up being the ignition module was going bad. You could also have a sloppy distributor. Sometimes O2 sensors can get "lazy" and throw off the mixture, without setting the error codes. But yours DID set an error code. Not sure how many miles you have, but you cat could need to be replaced. Running very rich fuel mixture shortens cat life. And I'd replace all the O2 sensors at same time. Bosch O2 sensors, IMO. |
