Re: MPG's

all the signs in town are pegged at $3.89 for 89oct and $3.99 for 87oct

went up to the lakes and seen $3.84 89oct and $3.94 87oct

dunno if thats actual prices or if gas is over $4...

i have a 3 cent off gallon coupon.. but it doesnt really take much off, 10 gallons is 30 cents.. it helps, but it doesnt do anything

im above 1/2 tank and ive gone 130ish miles

Re: MPG's

Alright!! Went through the first full tank after having the PCM reprogrammed. Normally MPG were 16-17. The first tank put out 18.5! Or about 1+ MPG more. Even with being stuck in dead stop traffic for 1 hour. At that rate, the $85 will pay for it self quickly. Not bad for a 4 door and simple modifications done to the Jimmy.

Re: MPG's

i get regularly 15 city driving only. I recently did a tune up and still the same. I am gonna be doing a water pump, intake manifold gaskets and while im at it im going to do the 03 and up injector setup as mine seems to have a miss to it still.

All this on a 98 blazer 4dr 2wd with 140k.

Re: MPG's

You should see a slight improvement with the updated spider. My Jimmy 4.3 responds very nice to throttle demand.

I think the next mod is an electric fan. Texas is hot, so the clutch fan engages any time I turn off the engine for little bit. Even idling at a light or traffic, the clutch fan engages with the A/C on.

Did I mention mine is a 4 door Jimmy? +155322+ miles on it too.

AC on around town will hurt your mileage, but if you are on the highway AC helps.

Re: MPG's

I seen the mythbusters where they tested this theory on 2 identical cars and they got the same mpg. However this wouldn't be true for all vehicles. The pulley is always spinning but when you turn the a/c on the clutch lets go putting a slight bit of extra load on your serpentine setup. Now that clutch also kicks in and out when the a/c is off, it does this to circulate the oil so nothing locks up. This is one good reason why there will be very little difference in mpg weather the a/c is on or off. You may get slightly better mpg if you took the a/c compressor out, but it's not worth it.

You'd get worse mpg in the city than the highway for 2 reasons. 1. stop and go driving. 2. with the stop and go driving and the a/c running the engine has to work a little harder on take off, while with highway driving you already have your rpm's built up and it's still working slightly harder than if the a/c was off, but not as hard as when you take off.

Re: MPG's

I just know that a vehicle uses more gas in the city than the highway. To figure my average mpg up I:
Fill the tank all the way up, record how many miles are on the odometer, use 1/2 tank, fill it up again, record the miles on the odometer. Subtract the 2nd recording from the 1st to get how many miles I went on 1/2 tank. Divide that by how many ga. it took to fill it back up.

Re: MPG's

i use the trip odometer

fill up till tank is topped off, reset trip and leave gas station, drive till near 1/2 tank and top the tank off, say i used 10 gallons and i drove 200 miles, that means average is 20mpg.

easiest way. it averages it all together, so if you do 50/50 city and highway itll be mixed. if you want highway, you have to fill up and start over before highway and after highway

With your windows open on the highway its like a opening a parachute because the air comes in and deosnt go anywhere. You are more aerodynamic with the windows up at high speeds than leaving them down. Around town it deosnt matter because you are usally driving slower.

i believe mythbusters tested that one but i dont remember the answer.

and yeah, just reset the trip everytime i fill up. now with my Bravada overheard console this year, it will tell me all of that and more.

This was a little flawed. I didn't have my A/C working for about 2 years and only had the windows cracked on the highway so the air coming in was just stirred up from the vent-a-shades. I got great mileage--sometimes 26mpg on long trips.
Who drives on the hwy with the windows completely down?

Re: MPG's

The most efficient MPG change is locking the torque converter. GM used very loose converters and programming. Especially on 4 doors. Reprogramming the PCM is necessary. Saving 200-300 RPMs increases MPG.

200-300 rpms at what speed? That's a big difference.

Re: MPG's

At any speed until it locks. The torque converter spins more at take off. It will slip less as you pickup speed. At highway speed 200-300 RPMs is common.

I wish I could lock it in 3rd gear. Due to city driving.

My old 83 locks the converter in 3rd gear. I drive mostly in 3rd in town. Electronic transmission don't lock the torque converter until OD.

it should work for you to. what you need is either the whole thing, or just the computer unit behind the display and the whole harness down to the dash. it doesnt matter if you get the whole console or not, mine has the homelink on it also.

You need the harness that goes from the driver's side kick panel to the homelink and the digital display.

Re: MPG's

They look the same. I put one from a 2002 Bravada in my '98 Blazer and it works, but the gas mileage is off by a couple of mpg. My '98 came from the factory with Homelink & digital trip computer so I didn't have to worry about the harness. I don't know what you mean about the sunroof buttons.

you need a long console, they are for trucks without a sun roof. you will be able to tell very easily because the short one is like less than a foot long.

Re: MPG's

no, its all read off of the computer and stuff. so, unless you want to do some major electrical work, the bravada is the only way to do it. or like i said, you can just swap out the compass part of it and the wiring.

The Scangauge (Click here) will work for you.

Your best bet is to get a console off E-bay. That's what I did. $49. Click here for one for sale now.
