Just bought a 98 Blazer and i got no heat

i picked up a 98 Blazer 4 door the LS model, with 121000 miles, all highway, its a very clean car, i got i for 2700 bucks , first thing i noticed when driving it after 3 days is the heat dont work anymore, my friend who works at chevy told me the heater core is probably clogged or i need a new one, how much would a mechanic charge to fix this?

I dont know how to specifically fix this problem, but if it were me I would buy a shop manual for your truck, your probably gonna need it anyways, and it'll have a step by step with pictures...

Thumbs up Re: Just bought a 98 Blazer and i got no heat

I have a 99 Blazer LS and had the same problem. I replaced the thermostat. STILL NO HEAT... I back flushed the heater core....MORE HEAT THAN EVER....Take off both hoses that go into and from the core. Add a piece of hose 4ft. to the inlet tube and run water thru a garden hose into the outlet. You wll be suprised what comes out. Hope you have as much luck as I did.......

Re: Just bought a 98 Blazer and i got no heat

It could be a numer of things. Check the heater core hoses after the engine's warmed up and see if they are warm, both should be. The easy way to see if the core is clogged is to disconnect the hoses at the engine and pump and blow into one of them, coolant should come out the other, just like blowing the water out a water hose.
Another thing is the temperature flapper behind the glove box might not be actuating. I believe that one is electric actuated, whereas the vent selector is vacuum actuated. If the temp flapper doesn't work, then you won't get heat either. Could be a bad actuator.

One more thing, my old 2.2 sonoma ran low on antifreeze once which caused the no heat condition too.

Re: Just bought a 98 Blazer and i got no heat

Dealer will ask about 750-900$ for the job. A mechanic will be at about 450-500$. I did it myself. Cost 80$ for the heater core and abotu 4 hours of my time.
its really not a hard job. Its jsut tedious because there is a bunch of stuff to remove. I was gonna have it done but those were the prices I was quoted so i just did it myself

Re: Just bought a 98 Blazer and i got no heat

I had same exact problem with my 98. mine would blow very little heat. going down the road about 55 and you stomp it and get the rpm's at redline the heat would work for a few more minutes. i had to un hook heater core at fire wall. filled with oven cleaner and hooked air to a hose and blew it out and then blew it out with water and been worked rest of the winter
