I have done an engine swap on a 1996 jimmy 4wd "w" vin code, the donor was a 2003 s10 4wd truck "x" vin code, I was told that if I took it down to the long block it would work, so i did that and I have it installed, truck runs flawlessly, BUT and it is a big BUT, it is very difficult to start. it seems to only want to start after i unplug the crank sensor, spin the engine over, the re-plug and then it semms to start okay. It kicks back against the starter, like it is out of time, but my understanding is that it will find the correct timing from the crank sensor and begin firing correctly. tried both crank sensors and it will only start with the 96 sensor, did i mention it runs great. But i am very frustrated
Please help me my wife is about to drive me crazy about her vehicle Thanks for any help gman73 |

Re: I need some help engine swap on 96 jimmy
the sensor may make it find time but that may take a while before it notices. you may want to check and make sure that it is timed properly. you may be off by a tooth on the dist or something.

I went back today and re-checked inital timing ( multiple times) and rotor button is pointing at The # 6 molded into the distributor with #1 piston at tdc on compression stroke combined with the mark on the balancer lined up with the notch on the front cover, that is according to the service manual is the correct setting. according to parts inquiries the sensors are all the same from 1996-2003(i.e. Crank pos sensor, cam sensor, even the distributor is the same.
I have now tried both distributors and crank sensors. Any other imput or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Gman |
