How to tell if there is an exhaust leak

My friend said that he thought that my Blazer might have an exhaust leak...He claims that it sounds like it does. Might sound dumb, but I have no clue what hes talking about.
Anyone care to enlighten me on this?

Re: How to tell if there is an exhaust leak

if its a puff puff puff or pop pop pop noise that changes according to engine speed, you probly have an exaust leak. i'll guess right now that its the flexpipe. they like to go bad.

Re: How to tell if there is an exhaust leak

haha...of course, I go to attempt to take a sound clip, and my camara decides to not record sound. It took the video fine, but no sound. It sorta sounds like that "pop pop pop" noise...but then again, it sounds more like a ticking noise. Its also way more noticible when I quickly rev it, not as much while maintaining a constant RPM

Re: How to tell if there is an exhaust leak

Wierd...it only has 29,000 on it. It was my grandpa's truck, but it wasnt drivin in the past 4 years EXEPT for my uncle using it to tow a jetski, so its hardly been drivin. So should I have the flexpipe checked out? Would I be able to tell if it was messed up just by looking at it?

Re: How to tell if there is an exhaust leak

if you take it to an exaust shop, they should be able to tell you (for free) if and where the exaust leak is. or, climb under it and wiggle the downpipe. you should be able to see whats going on.

they are expensive sometimes though. Mine is leaky, but i just live with it.

edit: I dont know the set-up on a 4.3.. dident realize this was in the blazer/jimmy/bravada section (linked from new post page, lol)

the 2.2's are known for the flexpipe due to the shaking/movement of the 4 cyl. not sure if the 4.3's even have a flexpipe set up. I would just climb under there when its running (but still cold) and feel around for air excaping at any joints/welds/ etc.

Re: How to tell if there is an exhaust leak

The 4.3L doesn't have a flexpipe. A y-pie bolts directly to the manifolds, and the two ends meet on the passenger side where it's bolted to the cat, and another flange meets the muffler to the welded tailpipe -- no flexpipe!

Can you identify about where the leak is occuring? Exhuast manifold? Or busted gasket between some of the flanges?

I had the flange between the cat and muffler leak... Replaced the gasket and new bolts and it was good to go.
