How can I unbolt exhaust?

Trying to get the exhaust off of the manifold... I have the body off so the bolt is easy to get to..

But I can't find the size of the bolts, I've tried everything... 7mm fit it good, then I twisted, it didn't move, and then it started to strip it a little

Re: How can I unbolt exhaust?

I did the collector gaskets on my truck. The original nuts were 13 mm. I got new studs and nuts and springs because I broke some of them. The new hardware was 9/16.

Dont be surprised if you break some studs.

Re: How can I unbolt exhaust?

I'm talking about y pipe to exhaust manifold... might just be easier to take the whole damn manifold off?

So was I. The collector gaskets are the gaskets in between the y-pipe and the manifold.

I wouldnt take off the manifold. just soak it good with penetrating oil and use a 6 point socket. you might wanna buy a hardened socket because I broke two sockets trying to get mine out because they werent hardened

Re: How can I unbolt exhaust?

Just about all new GM bolts are 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 15mm, 18mm.

They don't really use 14mm from what I've seen anymore. Just on the old crap.

And I don't think your turning the right peice. I think those bolts actually have little springs on them or something like that I thought. Should be a 13mm or a 15mm.

Re: How can I unbolt exhaust?

just like all of them said, spray some good penetrating oil on there and try breaking it loose after a good soak. its probably 13-15mm

Re: How can I unbolt exhaust?

Your trying to turn the wrong thing. You need to turn the nut. The nut may come off or the whole stud may come out.

Re: How can I unbolt exhaust?

Put a 3/8" or 1/2" drive ratchet with the appropriate socket on the nut, then get yourself a piece of conduit or steel tubing over the end, as long as you can make fit in tight confines, and use the bar as leverage.
Once you've already heeded everyone else's advice about a good soak with some penetrant of your choosing, that is.
