Grinding Noise

I have a pretty loud grinding/rubbing noise coming from my front end. One friend thought it might be an actuator in the 4WD causing it, another thought it was cupped tires. Its not coming from the brakes, it doesnt get louder or go away when the brakes are applied. The noise could be mistaken as really loud road noise (like driving over a bridge or on concrete pavement). I havent had a chance yet to have it looked at and was wondering if anyone ran into this problem or has any ideas on what it could be.

Re: Grinding Noise

i know when the wheel bearings were on their way out on my 00 jimmy with only 40k miles on it started to make some grinding noise if the truck was ever turned to the right. id def. at least check the bearings out, dont wanna end up replacing everything, cause if the bearings go bad they dont roll like they are designed and tear up the area that they are in..

Re: Grinding Noise

When your wheel bearings went out what did the grinding noise sound like? The grinding noise is pretty constant, but it does seem to get a little louder when i am turning. Would the noise be coming from the passenger or driver's side depending on what bearing was going bad or do they usually go bad at about the same time? One other friend of mine thought it also could be the wheel bearings, that makes me feel a little better because i could have any mechanic replace wheel bearings, but if it was something with the 4WD unfortunately i would probably have the dealer look at it.

Re: Grinding Noise

Sounds like wheel bearings. Sometimes they have a roar to them. Like you have a really aggressive tread on. When you say grinding do you mean a metal on metal sound? I would definitely check the bearings first.

Re: Grinding Noise

You almost described the noise exactly. I am going to get them checked out as soon as i get some time. Thanks for the help/info.

Re: Grinding Noise

Don't know what year you're talking about, but on a 2001 you have to replace the whole hub since it's got an abs sensor in it. When my hub was going it made a grinding noise. Then the abs started acting up. It's pretty easy to replace if you have some air tools (needed an air chisel to loosen it up).
