Front wheels bearings adjust

I'm probably the only one believing the right front bearing is loose, not the mechanics. What is behind the large 36 mm nut?. Is the bearing adjustable by tighten that nut?, which torque?. The wheel when hanging has a little movement at its lower part: in out when pushing with the hands. To me that's bearing.

Re: Front wheels bearings adjust

The bearing is a sealed unit, meaning it cannot be adjusted. The large 36mm nut is for the CV axle, assuming your vehicle is 4wd. In my opinion, the bearing needs to be replaced, which reminds me to do this to mine. Here is a good thread on how to go about this.... 4wd Hub/Bearing Assembly Replacement

Poor of me. But thanks for your comment/link. That loose condition is quite disturbing in a 68,000 km vehicle.

Re: Front wheels bearings adjust

It is not uncommon for them to fail at 40 - 50K
You can use an impact to remove
Take off wheel
Unplug ABS sensor and unbolt wiring from upper control arm and frame
Undo nut reach in and remove three bolts and hammer the living crap out of it, it will come of the splines eventually
Install new bearing in reverse order
Torque 36 mm nut to 200 ft lb This is important.

just outta curiousity, what would happen if you DIDNT torque them to 200 ft lbs?? i had to replace the ball joints and had to take that nut off..and unfortuantly only had a huge breaker bar. Would it by any chance cause a rattling sorta sound?

The large amount of torque im sure helps keep the sealed bearing together. Without it the wheel hub assembly/bearing could fail/prematurely wear.

Re: Front wheels bearings adjust

Holy cow, 200 foot pounds? Is that correct? My chilton's said 140Nm (that is ~105 foot pounds).

If so, I think I need to retorque! I would like to make sure they are done properly, since it will definitely affect bearing life...

TIA...

Re: Front wheels bearings adjust

According to GM, its 105 ft/lbs. Also, if the tire is hanging, and it moves, it's the bearing. You have to put a load on the lower control arm in order to test the ball joints.
Directions: Jack the car up and put jack stands under it. Take the jack and jack it up under the lower control arm so that you put some load on it just enough to slightly lift the car off the one jack stand. Grab the wheel and move it in and out with your hands at 12 and 6. Good luck. If it moves alot, its the ball joints.
