Exterior Spare Tire Holder

Well, I have a 4-door blazer, and my stock spare is under the truck. I will be lifting with a 5-6" kit, and would like to run with 32/33" tires... I would also like to carry a full-size spare, which will not fit underneath the truck. Does anyone know how to mount a spare either on the tailgate, or on the roof rack safely?

Re: Exterior Spare Tire Holder

yes, I understand that. My question was how I can do that on my blazer. I'm looking for any suggestions regarding mounting an oversized spare... Preferably on the tailgate or roof.

Go to some off-road truck parts stores/websites, they sell roof rack mounting junk.

Re: Exterior Spare Tire Holder

who wants an oversized spare taking up all the room in the back of their blazer? sheesh, save that room for subs and gear. use the roof rack mounting system. theres a jeep cherokee here at college that has an oversized spare on the roof and it looks sweet.

Re: Exterior Spare Tire Holder

its probably easier to pull your tailgate and just reinforce the tailgate to carry the spare. getting into that quarter panel to reinforce is a pain. I have my interior out right now and the quarter panel is hard to get to because there's another sheet of metal to go through.

HA, you want to add a spare tire mount and I want to get rid of mine!

Re: Exterior Spare Tire Holder

personally I wouldnt want to drill my tailgate. the reinforcement would be substantial unless you want a tewaked tailgate or a spare passing you on the freeway cause it ripped the sheetmetal off and killed a bus full of nuns. a 32-33 inch spare will run you close 80 pounds

three things you can do.

One is to mount it on the roof and please dont use the stock roof rack get yourself a real roof rack. the bad thing most likely a custom install because youll need to either use the stock old mounting holes from the stock rack or drill new holes. then rust and leaks which you dont want

Second option
Find a Jeep Cherokee that has a rear mounted spare tire. usually the tire mount was bolted to the frame. Make yourself a new mount bolt it on and there you go.

third option

You can go have a custom bumper made that incorporates a swing away tire mount. I know they make them for Jeeps so i dont see why you cant adapt one for a blazer. Kinda high priced or you can make your own if you can cut and weld steel

well, I found a mount that looks like it'd work... you have to get the basket that mounts to the stock roof rack, and then the tire mounts to the basket. The stock rack holds like 200 lbs, so I don't see why I need a new rack... care to share?

I'll have to look into this. All the jeep cherokees I've seen have the spare inside the cargo area -- I'm only aware of the wrangler with the outside-mounted spare... but I'll have to check it out.

I was quoted around $2000 for this. No thanks.

Well My friend had a blazer and he did the same thing. I gave him a roof basket rack and he bolted it to the stock rack. I had to cut and weld it cause it was too wide for the blazer but it looked great. the problem was the stock roof rack is not strong. the 200 pound rating is evenly distributed weight. If you add a rack and a tire youre probably close to that rating. Either way we went hunting and on the way there we were going through some rough areas. the tire and rack started to pull on the stock rack and broke it. if you want to carry your tire on the roof I would get rid of the stock rack and then make some mounts that bolt to the stock holes of the old roof rack. its not really hard to do cause thats what we ended up doing on my buddys truck. his was a 4 door blazer.

As far as the cherokees Im talking abotu the old square ones early to mid 80s. Most had them in the storage area but I see some here and there with the rear tire mounts. they dont swing away like the blazer does it sort of swings down towards the ground like a tailgate on a truck would.
I usually find those at the junk yards.

I guess because i made my own stuff when it was too expensive to buy or nobody made one I dont consider it a big deal to make one.

Hope it helped. I dont mean to sound rude or anything I was jsut giving some suggestions

Re: Exterior Spare Tire Holder

well, I spent an hour with a local fabricator that specializes in heavy-duty truck fabricating. We have arrived at a tenative design that will allow me to keep my stock bumper, and have a rear-mounted spare tire. Cost will be approximately $550. I'll take pics when it's all done up.

my bumper would not withstand your requirements??? you trying to build a tank or something?? i have run over trees, buildings, cars, whatever is in front of me...not even the first dent. i went completely through a steel building and my hood was the only thing that dented because a piece of steel feel on it. its 3/16" sheet steel. my frame will bend and most likely break before the bumper does. same specs as ARB, road-armor, TJM, etc... ill take a video of me runnin through stuff, then we will see if it wont meet your "requirements". for real man...what are you trying to build?

look at the blazer step-side rear bumper... you cannot build a custom bumper to meet my requirements without doing exactly what I've already had quoted for $550.

im not tryin to build you a bumper or anything. im just trying to save you some money. it can be done cheaper, but im guessin your the kinda guy that can afford to shell out $550 to some guy. a shop here in town wanted to charge me $650 for the EXACT bumper i built for $130. Another example of people getting ripped. www.cardomain.com/id/nfarthing03 The safari rack was built by me for $30 and cheapest on the net is $150 PLUS shipping. as far as the 200lb rating goes, depends on how crazy you are. im 150lbs, and can stand in my roof basket, no problem. no flexing or anything. its all in knowing what your doing. do a lil more research man. you'll save yourself money. i dont see what you are getting added to this bumper to make it so expensive.

Re: Exterior Spare Tire Holder

the big difference is that the professional safari rack looks good.... yours looks home made. Glad you like it, but I don't want something that looks thrown-together.
