Envoy HID replacement (please help)

I have had a HID bulb out on my 1998 Envoy for quite some time now, and finally the second has gone. I have been driving with just the high beams and been pulled over three times. One more is my last(so the local PD says) They are saying it will be $600 to fix. I dont want to pay that much nor do I want to drive at night and get a ticket. Is it possible to replace with normal jimmy headlights? or could you use less watt bulbs in the highbeams and drive like that for now? Let me know. OR a complete fix on the HID's. Thanks in advance.

Envoys use D2S

You have to buy GM bulbs or replace the bulbs and ignitors with after market. GM have a special connectors. If you want the colors to match you need to do both side at the same time.

Re: Envoy HID replacement (please help)

im confused. d2s bulbs look different to me. i thought they used d1s OEM because the silver box on the back of the bulb and the ballast connectors.

i did my envoy conversion and used d2s bulbs but i had to make a braket to hold the bulbs in and i used oem lexus ballasts.

could you also clear something else up. all the research i did always stated that the "S" at the end of the bulb (d1s, d2s) were always for projectors and the "r" bulbs (d1r,d2r) were for relector housings. hwy does the envoy use a "s" bulb in a reflector housing?

Re: Envoy HID replacement (please help)

S is for headlight with built in shield ( envoy has a built in shield)

R is for headlight without built in shield

S/R has nothing to do with the silver box on OEM GM HID

Re: Envoy HID replacement (please help)

cool that makes sense for the shield.

i know the R/S has nothing to do with the silver box but the 1/2 does... D1R and D2R. the D1R has the silver box and D2R dfoes not.

the envoy has the silver box so i thought it was D1S.

what ballasts do you have and how is the bulb held into the headlight?Oem gm ballasts have the d1 connection. is your whole set up non- gm?

the oem bulbs utilize the silver box with tabs to screw it down to the headlight.

Re: Envoy HID replacement (please help)

ok that makes more sense then because i did the exact same thing. i used lexus ballasts and d2s bulbs and custom brackets to hold the bulbs.

to help the original poster.... is it safe to say that from the factory envoys came with d1s bulbs.

Until you get it fixed you could stick some electrical tape on your headlight right in front of the high beam bulb, just enough to keep the beam out of people's eyes.

Just use the adjusting screw to aim the headlights down.

Re: Envoy HID replacement (please help)

I'd rather pull some tape than readjust my headlights.

Re: Envoy HID replacement (please help)

The bulbs don't come out... atleast mine didn't...

Cheapest way is buy a complete aftermarket conversion kit... pull out all the GM crap and put in aftermarket setup!! It cost me $260 Canadian for 2 complete bulbs/brackets/igniters etc... fab up a little bracket to keep the bulb in, and you're good to go...

hope this helps...
