Envoy HID Headlights (Modification)
I recently purchased a 2000 Jimmy Diamond edit. that has Envoy HID headlights. After I purchased it I noticed the passenger headlight was out. I removed the headlight and the ignitor was just laying there with the bulb sheared off, no mounting screws and missing the sheild. Went to the parts counter at my local chevy dealer to find out what was missing and what i needed for my headlight. Replacement bulb had to be mated to a new ballast due to design changes. List price for both were over $600 each. I ended up buying the OEM parts on the internet for $400 ea. Once I got the new ballast and bulb I realized that the ballast is a standard ballast that is used on cadilacs and many other vehicals and is readily available on ebay. The only differance is that the OEM part has a mounting plate and pig tail to mate with the 9006 bulb harness. The connector for the bulb at the ballast is a standard connector. My plan is to install a D1s bulb retainer to the headlight assy. and that way I can use standard D1S bulbs from now on and still have OEM HID Headlights.

Re: Envoy HID Headlights (Modification)
you should have just got $60.00 HID kit off ebay and made your own bracket to hold the bulbs in your housings. It is a whole lot cheaper to do than any other route I have found

Re: Envoy HID Headlights (Modification)
I know now that I could have done an HID conversion but at the time I purchased the Ballast and a new bulb for passenger side I was unaware of all my options. Now I have a new bulb and ballast that I am never going to get rid of as long as they are functional. I was able to get the same ballast with mounting plate with the Ballast to Bulb cable plus the pig tail for the car harness for $60 and two D1S bulb holders for $5.00 on ebay. If and when the drivers side goes out all I will have to purchase is a D1S Bulb. Mount the bulb holder to the headlight housing.

Re: Envoy HID Headlights (Modification)
No not really, the OEM Ballast and bulb are not available from any one else except GM. There are no aftermarket providers that make the bulb or ballast. The current OEM replacement bulb will not mate into the original ballast. If you do not believe me go to any of the GM parts on line and try to purchase the ignitor and ballast for a 2000 Envoy or Jimmy with HID headlilghts. They list for over $600 each. That is why a lot of Envoy owners switch to HID Conversion or to a 9006 Bub. The OEM bulb is not a standard HID Bulb. There is no connector at the bulb itself and there is a mounting flange bolted to the ignitor that mates to the headlight.

Re: Envoy HID Headlights (Modification)
The OEM bulb is a DS2 bulb.

Re: Envoy HID Headlights (Modification)
Be carefull when you say never. Attached are pictures of my 2000 GMC Jimmy Diamond Edition with HID headlights. Also notice the original ballast and ingitor with the bulb sheared off and the replacement OEM Ballast and bulb. The bulb itself is a D1S (Ignitor Attached and no shadding on the glass) but the ignitor housing does not have a connector it is hardwired. Also you can see that the mounting flange is mated to the Ignitor Assy. The OEM replacement does not mate to the original ballast so that is why when you want to replace with OEM hardware you have to order the new ballast as well. The other differences is that the ingitor housing is larger than a standard D1S bulb. This is just the facts no opinion here.

Re: Envoy HID Headlights (Modification)
I challange any one who can find GM P/N 16533056 (F-Ignitor) and P/N 16533055 (F-Ballast) to let me know. The only place I found was from GM. These are the OEM replacement parts. There is not a standard bulb that will plug and play without modifications to the mounting, buying cables and having the correct ballast.

Re: Envoy HID Headlights (Modification)
I believe who ever sheared off the bulb from the ignitor was trying to seperate the bulb from the ignitor. I actually cut the top off of the old Ignitor assy. to see how it was all put together and the inside of the ignitor is full of potting material. There is no way to extract the bulb from the ignitor.

Re: Envoy HID Headlights (Modification)
I have envoy head lights and they take (took) the D1S bulb so this is what I did instead of giving my money away.
1st I ordered this 2nd I went to my local u-pull it and got these from a mid 90's buick regal ![]() 3rd I took the mounting bracket off of my D1S bulbs ![]() 4th I sandwiched the 9006 retainer from the buick in between the Envoy housing and the D1s bracket with the same screws that were holding in the D1S ![]() then all that was left was wiring which was pretty easy for me since my jimmy came factory with H.I.D's I did not even need a relay harness or any thing cause it was all there already. The only problem I have now is that I have stripped the star head out on the damn adjuster screws so I have to figure out how to turn them |
