Differential cover

What size differential cover do I need to get for my 02 Blazer (was Xtreme, kits off)?

And is there an advantage to spending money on one... like the aluminum ones at Summit? I don't know shit about my differential, except that my cover is messed up.

Also, changing one... what's the process? Just bolt on? I mean... I'm afraid of oil and what not

Re: Differential cover

little elves might come out and knaw on your nutsack if you wear shorts...so make sure to wear long pants and tuck your pants into your sneakers so they can not crawl up...lol

i believe it is a 7.5

and yeah un bolt and remove all the old gasket...add new gasket make a gasket....bolt down new...then fill with gear oil

Re: Differential cover

i believe if your looking at the cover from behind, a rounder shaped one is 7.5 and a little more squared is 8.5. mine is a 8.5 because its a 5spd. it talks about it a little in the 3/5 link how to on the home page of the forum. but why do you need a new one?

Re: Differential cover

Mine is rusted and looks like something hit it pretty hard... and I was interested in a chrome one.

you have this backwards...

the 7.625" differential has a squarish cover

the 8.5" differential has a roundish cover.

my truck (8.5" ring gear):

Re: Differential cover

Thanks Ryan

So, any reason to not get a chrome one and opt for an aluminum one? Don't really know what purpose the cover really serves

Re: Differential cover

The diff. cover has many purposes. Prevent housing flex and cool the fluids. The f-body guys like to use TA diff. covers to help their 10-bolt last a little bit longer before upgrading to a 12-bolt or a nine inch. About the TA covers, they come in aluminum, adds strength to the case and provides support to the bearing caps.

i'd go ahead and spring for the aluminum cover if you do any spirited driving.

Re: Differential cover

Spirited = ?

I launch from red lights... just a bad habit... don't know if you'd call that spirited driving

Re: Differential cover

I would also try to find one with a drain plug and a fill plug. The original fill plug is so hard to get out and there is no drain plug. It would make it a lot easier to change your fluid.
