Couple of A/C questions....

My a/c is currently not working on my '01 Jimmy with auto controls. I picked up a can of refrigerant at Autozone with the gauge on it and when I first hooked it up the pressure was way high. It was in the danger zone. I cracked a line and bled off the pressure then refilled it. It still doesn't work and I have a few questions.

How can you tell if the clutch is engaging? Is it visible, audible, etc.
Where is the HVAC control module that I see on the wiring diagrams I am looking at located? Is it part of the control panel? (Diagrams courtesy of autozone's website.)
There are 2 connectors on the compressor, one is for the clutch, what is the other one for?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Re: Couple of A/C questions....

It will read high if the compressor isnt on. When the compressor clutch engages, the front of the compressor turns. You will know when it comes on!The other switch is the high or low pressure switch. It should be a little round plug?
You may need to add more freon.

Re: Couple of A/C questions....

Okay here is what I have figured out. The compressor was not running so I put a jumper on the low pressure switch and it turned on. I put the rest of the R-134 can in it and bought another and almost have dumped that entire one in it. It still won't run without the jumper. The gauge on the can shows it in the filled range and the air blows cold. Should I trust the gauge on the can and stop servicing it and leave the jumper in? I don't really want to pay someone to fix it if I can make it work. If it was the high side I rigged to make it work I would be more concerned, but I don't see any danger in jumping the low side. Do those switches ever go bad?

Re: Couple of A/C questions....

Pick up a new low side pressure switch, they can go bad. The only thing is if the compressor runs and its low on refrigerant then you can burn up your compressor. The switches are easy to replace and you won't have to empty the system or anything.
