Question Common issues...

Hello,

I purchased a 1997 GMC Jimmy with 190K+ miles on it. Is this a first gen or a second gen GM? Can a Mod move it to 2nd if I am mistaken? Gotta good deal, but recently the rear U joint was shot, so it was replaced. Last week it ran out of coolant and I had to have the intake manifold gasket replaced. I read this truck had issues with DEXCOOL being hard on gaskets?

Other issues that I repaired myself were P0442 code, fixed only by installing a NEW OEM gas cap, others didn't work. New front rotors, new rear brakes, new rear speakers and new cap, rotor and wires.

Recently a P1406 code came up, so I cleaned out the EGR valve and put a new gasket on WITH the screen ($19 extra).

Issue I haven't figured out is with the radio. It drains my battery, so I had to pull the backup power fuse. No memory. Kinda PITA. No CD.

Re: Common issues...

Your jimmy is a 2nd gen. (2nd gen started in 1994)
You are right about dexcool being hard on gaskets. Normally the dexcool takes out the intake gasket and headgaskets sometimes.

As far as the po442 code. When you tighten down the gas cap make sure it clicks at least 3 times to help prevent the code from coming back. That is part of the evap systems hence the code.

I have no experience with the p1406 code.

Is your radio stock or aftermarket? If aftermarket it could just be wired completely wrong. Since you pulled the backup fuse for the radio has it stopped draining the battery? If so the ignition and 12v could be criss crossed.

Re: Common issues...

I know that on my frist gen. blazer that the stock radio in it was draining the batt. So i pulled the radio and but in a new one and it fixed it. So all i could figure out is that the radio had a short in it

I wish I could figure this out. I like having a clock and presets. It was drawing 250 mA of current until I pulled the fuse. WAY too much. Should be around 3 mA I'd assume. No known fixes eh? Other than replacing it..

I looked on ebay and the stock radios were going for $75-$100+ dollars.
