Exclamation Climbing Temperature Gauge

Recently took ownership of my late father's 1994 Chevrolet S10 Tahoe Blazer and am intent on keeping up with it.

I recently start noticing that the Blazer's temperature gauge shoots up to red zone within the first eight or nine minutes of operation. In response, the sensor reads "Check Gauges". The light remains on and the gauge pegged in red for 3 - 4 minutes, then the light goes off and the gauge descends to between 210 and 250 degrees. I don't know if this is the sign for a potential costly problem or is it just a quirk...

Suggestions? Thoughts?

Advisors can either respond to my question here or via e-mail at rjuderome@msn.com

Any and all thoughts and suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Climbing Temperature Gauge

Howdy

First I'd check the coolant level to ensure it is at the proper level. Check for leaks. Then check the connection between the coolant temp sending unit and the wiring harness for a good clean connection. Next ensure that the theromstat is opening up. Check this by feeling the upper radiator hose and make sure it is warm after the gauge reads 190 or higher. At the same time apply a slight squeeze to the hose to see if the water pump is properly circulating the coolant.

Re: Climbing Temperature Gauge

could be the heater core if your heats no working. in my case my heat works on and off but my temp was shooting all the way up and the check gauges light came on. and then it drops after a few minutes. i bought a new heater core and in the process of ripping the hole dash out to replace it.
