Does anyone know where i can find the steps to clear out my headlight assembly on my 98 GMC Jimmy? i've heard of a lot of things, like using a hairdryer and baking the assembly in the oven to losen the glue, but i'd really like to know what works the best. and if there are any sites out there with step by step procedures.

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
theres a few different ways to do it...i melted the hell out of the casing with the hairdryer, and then i pryed open the casing just enough to get the amber piece out....then i sealed it back up with gm black silicone and it is good as new....if u look at the headlight from behind, which ur never gonna see, u can see some melted spots, but ur never gonna see it so it dont matter

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
I set my GMC lights on a piece of cardboard on a cookie sheet inside the oven and heated for a few minutes on 200*, then used a flat-head screwdriver to pry the headlight apart. After you get it apart the amber piece comes right out. Make sure to use silicone to seal it back up good. Also make sure not to get fingerprints or anything else on the inside of the headlight.

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
do you have to peel the black rubber off before you stick it in the oven?

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
I put mine in the oven on a clean cookie tray lense down. I removed the rubber piece and had the oven at just under 200 with the door open a bit. I checked them every two and a half minutes and worked at them a bit with a flat head screw driver. I took 4 times checking and heating per light for the glue to to finally give. I tryed with a heat gun at first but the oven is dfinately the way to go. I also used clear silicone to seal them back up.

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
i just did mine today...does anyone else have the built in fog lights? mine i heated up in oven at 200 for about 5 minutes took out and tried prying...got it to move , put back in for another 4 and then pryed them right apart, pieces fell out and stuck it back together. then i siliconed the edges back up and superglued the rubber piece back on them. I however got a suprise when i did the right side and as i was superglueing it i noticed there is a crack in the housing that goes all the way through in the bottom left corner where there is no light. Its small but noticeable up close, i have no idea why it is cracked , def bummer. Has anyone put strobes in the corner where there is no light? I am thinking of doing just that , i think itd' be pretty hot lookin.. I will post pics when i get it all dried and put back in, I also went to the wallyworldmart and got the amber 3157 bulbs , so far it looks pretty awesome. Im hopin however it wont affect the fog lights at all.?

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
i found a heat gun easier, and the stuff just pealed off, the hard part is seperating the backing from the lens, you have to be super careful not to crack the reflective backing or it could get messed up...some of the plastic will proably crack but just fill it up with silicon, clear or black..dosent matter no one is gonna see it

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
maybe i don't know...looking at that way it does seem possible, there is no crack in the lens or marks or anything and it just looks like it is like that but is definitely broke....wierd...anyone else have this problem? |

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
I just used a hairdryer. just did a corner at a time and pulled it apart w/ a screwdriver. Only pulled up the corners and slid out the reflector, i have the lights w/ fogs so you have to do the both sides. Really easy except one of my lights is a "new aftermarket" and it isn't held with glue, but with some sorta sticky strip that got all over me when i heated it up...

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
Is there anyone out there that would be interested in clearing me out a set of 1996 Jimmy headlights? I will pay you for your work of course, the headlights, and the shipping to get them to me.. I am afraid to screw it up due to one of my hands not functioning properly since I got hurt at work. If interested, feel free to email me at dvs_one@sympatico.ca and we can try to work something out. Your kindness for helping will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
yeah...I was gonna put in composites in my 96 then clear them out but I didn't want to ruin two expensive new headlights by screwing it up and cracking them. so what did I do? I spent more money and did a 98+ blazer conversion and bought clear lights for it

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
the glue should have been soft by then, but i had to use a flathead screwdriver to give it a little pry, be careful thou not to pry on the reflective side too much cause it will crack, i cracked mine, but i cant even tel where unless you look at it very close..

I tried the "check every few minutes" but that's not really working for me. I'm gonna give em 10-15 and see, then. |

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
I think it looks bad with 95-97 composites, unless you have a clear ruffled reflector to put inplace of the amber colored one.
I suggest when you do the oven trick that you leave the door open on it. |

Re: Cleared Headlights for GMC Jimmy
My headlight on the noma is "fogged" or kinda blemished. If I remove the backing and clean it do you guys think it'd work? I planned on clearing them anyway but I may have to buy a new one.

It looks awful, unless you can find a clear refecter that has the ripples in it.

Only if you can find a clear ripple reflector. Other wise, without it, it's horrible. |
