Brake job

Looks like I'll be doing a brake job on Wed. My front passengerside is squeeking. Do these vehicles have the plastic bearings cases? 156000+ miles on my Jimmy. Depending on rotor use, I may replace everthing during the brake job.

Re: Brake job

If it's 4wd you'll need to replace the whole hub assembly if you want to do the bearings. If 2wd, then it should be like normal RWD vehicles.

I don't know what everyone else does, but if you have the twin piston calipers, you'll need to move one piston in a little, then the other. Do this back and forth until they are both moved back in. Also watch the brake reservior level asquite a bit can come back out. On the newer vehicles ceramic pads were stock and will run about $35 at Autozone while regular semi metallic will run $20 for a cheap set. I bought my ceramics at Rock Auto for $20 a set but I ordered a LOT of stuff, making the shipping cost worth the extra amount.

Re: Brake job

98+ have sealed bearing hubs and are quite expensive. I would only change them if they are needed.

Rotors are cheap so it wouldnt hurt to chang them if you dont have when they were last changed.

Re: Brake job

I don't have maintenance records for rotors ever being replaced. The previous owner was very detailed on keeping maintenance records. The 17" wheels are demanding to stop. The rotor are really small. I'll probably change them. I wish there was a bolt on larger rotor and caliper.

Re: Brake job

the only thing you can really do is swap in 98+ 2 piston calipers and discs in the rear. My 18's are heavy as hell and I notice a little fade with them, but its not bad enough to really worry about.
