Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
Nothing to do with the aftermarket security...but it does need power to remove the key and put it in park. |

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
There is a small solenoid located by the key slot, it will pop in to allow you to remove the key and or get it into gear. you can remove the plastic and pop this by hand if you need too.
and yes that is normal haha |

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
My blazer does this too and takes forever for the key to be removed. Is it a hard fix to replace the whole ignition? It does this locking on both mine and my wifes key and we are finally tired of it.

We had this problem with my girlfriend's grand am. Easiest solution is probably to jump it if you can.

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
Mine only happens when I go to turn off my blazer. Once the key is turned it locks itself in the keyhole and we have to keep twisting the key to get it out. Sometimes it takes one try then others the key stays in the blazer in my garage overnight and then just comes out.

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
look just under the ignition, there's a small cap that needs to be removed then just push something like a toothpick in the hole to remove the key

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
The only thing under mine is the bottom half of the steering column trim. Is the access hole underneath the trim piece?

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
it's about 3/8" diameter, under the ignition... it's in there pretty good, you'll need a knife or something to pry the plug out... here's a pic... ![]() |

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
if bubba's 97 has it, and my 00 has it, your 98 must have it... get in there with a flashlight and look closer... you have to pry the plug out |

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
Never knew about that plug. I've got a 2000 Jimmy and a 97 Sonoma. I always hooked a battery charger up or jumped it. Now I know for next time. Thanks.

Here is a pic of the column on my Blazer and I don't see a hole or a plug, except for the holes under the center of the column.

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
Just went and checked... the 97 sonoma has it and the 2000 Jimmy... different shape plugs and in slightly different location but both have it
I wonder if it has to do w/ floor vs column shift |

Maybe it's because I have the tilt column?

Keep a good battery/alternator on the car and you won't have the problem

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
I wish it was this simple. Brand new battery and rebuilt alternator and it still does it. I think there is something loose in the ignition key area. |

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
Could be. Never had the problem unless I go out to start it and it was dead. The 2000 Jimmy we have, doesnt get drove much so it drains the battery once in a while.
Mom did mention that yesterday when she drove it she had to "jiggled the damn steering wheel again to get the key to turn" lol |

Re: Batterie dies key wont come out
Rock Auto.com lists a solenoid but it is for a "gear reduction starter" whatever that means. Last edited by Yogi : 11-21-2008 at 11:17 AM. |
