a 4wd question.
ok i just have a quick 4wd question. so my light on the dash says my truck is in 4hi. i know it is not i jacked it all up and only the back tires move(and that is when the 4x4 actuator has the vacuum hose unplugged from it). and when i plug it in i jacked it up and it was in 4wd because all 4 tires spun. so what should i do? i have checked and i have not found any good answers. thanks in advanced

Re: a 4wd question.
Sounds like you have a perfectly functional 4x4 system. 4x4 shouldn't work when the actuator isn't hooked up and it should work when it is hooked up, exactly as you described. |

Re: a 4wd question.
yea i am sorry for the confusion . my dash switch is in 4hi and the truck is in 2wd because the actuator is unplugged and i lifted it and it had the back tires spinning only and when i plugged in the actuators vacuum hose all four tires spun. so how do i get the switch to work. i think it is always telling the system to always have vacuum to the actuator and that is why plugging and unplugging it makes 4 w.d. work. so how to fix that?
thanks for the help and sorry for confusion |

Re: a 4wd question.
For example, recently my vacuum actuator went out on my truck. I could hit the switch and it would go 2 4HI but it wasn't actually engaging the front wheels. Bought a new vacuum actuator and everything was good. PLUG IN YOUR ACTUATOR AND YOU WILL HAVE A PERFECTLY FUNCTIONING 4x4 S-10!!! |

Re: a 4wd question.
yes the switch is stuck in 4hi it clicks and blinks once real fast when i press 2hi and blinks non stop when i press 4lo.
so what do you all think i should do. for a wile i had the actuator plugged in but my blazer drove like in 4wd(because it was) and i did not like it so i have it unplugged. Last edited by noom14921992 : 08-12-2008 at 12:01 AM. |

Re: a 4wd question.
I'm not very familiar with the push button setup, but it sounds like the servo, or what ever actually moves the lever that is physically on the transfer case is stuck or has quit functioning. Therefore pushing the button does nothing and it is still in 4wd. I am just guessing, but it may be something to that effect.

Re: a 4wd question.
To check it, unhook the battery for an extended period of time(30-60 minutes). This will completely reset the truck's computer. Sometimes the computer just gets confused and this will fix it. Chances are however that your encoder motor is on the way out. It is a common enough problem that "encoder motor" searched through Google brings up a forum discussing 4x4 problems with a Blazer. A good read for you... DO NOT BUY THE ENCODER MOTOR FROM GM!!!! I bought a re-manufactured one online for way less than the GM price and it even had a guarantee. |

Re: a 4wd question.
it could be the switch in the dash...they do go bad and it is easy to swap out with a buddy who has one...or even one from a junkyard

Re: a 4wd question.
I have a spare switch if you test it and it is that. As long as you dont have auto 4wd it will work, but it deos sond like an encoder motor to me.

Re: a 4wd question.
I'd say that the most important things to check are the fuse, switch, vacuum hoses, vacuum actuator, and encoder motor. In no particular order. The biggest thing to remember about the 4x4 systems on these trucks is that pretty much anything can fail on them. If you want a laugh sometime, check the forum for posts regarding 4x4 failure whenever winter sets in. |

Re: a 4wd question.
you do have the truck in NUETRAL right? it wont switch if its not in nuetral. it will keep on blinking and click if you are trying to switch it when its in anything other than nuetral.

I'm so happy I found this thread... Mine is stuck in 4X4 low and it blinks just like that.. It makes a slight buzz sound then does nothing...

Re: a 4wd question.
atleast your guys' switch stays lit up, mine is never lit up so i never know what im in, and it wont switch because its not lit up,if i touch the wire plugged into the back thats the long verticle one, the switch will light up if moved right. thus the only way to get it to light up is to smack the switch a bunch of times and then it will shut off again right after that. im thinking the switch itself is bad, but it doesnt explain why the light will come on if i move the wires around that go into the dash. |
