98 GMC Jimmy Transmission Change

The transmission recently went out of my 98 GMC Jimmy 4x4, I lost 3rd, overdrive and reverse. Im not satisfied with the used transmissions lying around forsale, and I was wondering if this is a common problem with this series of 4L60, and if a 4L80 swap would be possible as I am considering a LS1 swap later on. Any input or recommendations would be great.

Are you sure you lost third? Its common for them to lost second, overdrive, and reverse. The sun shell breaks. There is an updated sun shell for the that is supposed to be more robust. When i worked for GM i put several in and never had one come back. As far as the 4l80 i dont have a clue if it will fit.
