98 gmc envoy headlights
Both my headlights went out in my envoy. It has the hid headlights with a ignitor and ballast. The headlights would flicker for a sec. or so then it went out it did this on both sides. It cost 2k for factory supplies to fix the problem. Can anyone help me out with suggestions on fixing this problem.

Re: 98 gmc envoy headlights
Are they stock HID ballast and Ignitors?
Sounds like not enough volts. The stock wiring is small and its sounds like the same issue on an aftermarket PnP HID kit. You need to get a upgrade harness and realys for the HID input. You can buy them or make them. |

Re: 98 gmc envoy headlights
If you want to sell them. You can just get the normal gmc headlights.

Re: 98 gmc envoy headlights
You shouldn't have to rig them in the housing they are D1S or D2S bulb so make sure you get a kit with that bulb. And it would not need a harness cause it is stock so they are getting enough power

Re: 98 gmc envoy headlights
Could someone help me out with this... I'm confused even though I've read all the replies and I'm having the exact problem. I'm not paying $1000 to fix a headlight.

Re: 98 gmc envoy headlights
Yeah I get that part and thanks for the link, however on a stock 98 envoy the HID bulbs are hard wired into the harness and use tamper resistant screws. Where could I go from here?

Re: 98 gmc envoy headlights
You can get the funky little screw bits for the HIDs from most places like O'Reilly's, PEP Boys, etc (here in Canada, I went to Princess Auto). Under $10 anyways. I cant remember if at that point the bulb comes out or not, but, for me, for the price, id just get a whole new HID kit. Follow the wiring from the HID back and it will take you to the bumper rebar behind the bumper cover. Under there, each HID ballast box is mounted. It is a 9005 plug that plugs into that box. An aftermarket HID kit will just plug into that 9005 wiring.

Re: 98 gmc envoy headlights
Did you check for power at the plug? Use a multimeter, and check for 12v at the plug that connects to the HID ballast box. It's kind of a pain to get to it on the envoys, you may even have to completely take off the bumper! It's worth checking before you drop even $100 on new lights!
