'96 S10 Blazer(Auto) turns over, but won't start.

My roommate has had this '96 Blazer for a while now, a few weeks back he got into his vehicle to start it and it would turn over but wouldn't start! He had this problem before, but eventually it would start. This time, he isn't so lucky.

First I checked to see if I could hear the fuel pump come on, yes I could hear it humming. Then we replaced the fuel filter(it probably needed it anyways), gas is getting to and through the fuel filter. Still would not start. Checked plugs and wires, made sure there was gas (hah), checked distributor cap(newer) was pretty clean and looked good.

Another friend of his decided to pour a bit of gas directly into the carb, and after doing this it would start and idle for at least a minute(we never tried for longer). However, as soon as you shift into reverse it will die.

Any suggestions? I'm tired of driving him around, although I'm sure hes loving not paying much for gas.

Welcome to the Forum!

Sounds like a bad fuel pump. They are very expensive to replace - approx. $300 for the pump module only!

It's best to get a fuel pressure gauge and test the pressure to be sure that it's the pump. There is a valve stem on the fuel line back by the driver's side of the distributor. Hook the Gauge on there. Should be 58 psi min. with key on engine off. Click here for a good price on fuel pumps.

Sigh that is what the neighbor was saying, told us that he had to replace a fuel pump in his jimmy and it was more than $300. Will pick up a fuel pressure gauge and go from there, thanks Yogi
