Either the encoder motor is bad or there is a 3 port vacuum switch on the transfer case that goes bad. I would try the vacuum switch first, since it's the cheaper of the two.

I got mine stuck in low once, not sure if you have the same shift motor as me, but I just took the plastic housing off to have a look, couldn't do anything with it, put the cover back on and it worked ever since, guess it got stuck.

Re: 4x4 works in Low, but no High

Ok, im going to ressurect this post, because im having the same problem. Only my truck is a 91 S-10. When I put it in 4H it doesnt work, but 4L works like a charm. It is not the 3 pronged actuator because I checked it, and its working.

Any ideas?

Mine did the same thing. I unhooked the battery for a while which resets it and changed the fluid in the transfer case and its been working ever since

Re: 4x4 works in Low, but no High

bad encoder motor. change the motor.

the other might be bad 4x4 switch...unlikely.
or a bad TCM(4x4 computer).....unlikely also.
