Re: 4wd not working

your 4x4 switch might be bad, i am having the same problem with my 98 blazer. when i have it in 4wd i have to switch from 4 low to 4 high a couple of times to get it to go back into 2hi. i was told it was a bad switch.

Re: 4wd not working

I'm not well versed in the workings of our 4x4 setup but I will try to help. If the something is moving on the transfer case then most likely the button is ok. As it is sending a signal to the actuator. Over time the 4x4 actuator has a tendency to weaken, therefore not having enough strength to pull the levers all the way. Some on the boards have opted for a manual cable that takes the place of the electrical/vacuum(not quite sure which one we have) solenoid. I would post a link to the website that sells them but that info was lost in the system crash. What is sounds like form your description is that the front hubs/differential is not locking in due to this weak actuator. There is supposed to be something under the battery that has to do with this, but I cannot recall if it was the actual solenoid or not. I would place the vehicle up on stands, getting all 4 wheels off the ground and then engage the 4x4, looking to see what moves and what doesn't. Then, I would put the truck into drive and let the wheel spin. If the transfer case is engaged then the front drive shaft should spin. If the differential is not locking in then the drive shaft will spin but the wheels will not.
