2001 Blazer Gas Mileage Problem

PLEASE HELP! I am trying to find out what the problem is with my 2001 S-10 blazer. I am getting really bad gas milage, i have had it to 2 different shops and they both tell me different things. The 1st one says my timing is off, it is at -15 and they say it should be at 0. He wants to make a bracket for the distrubitor to fake out the computer. The second one say no my timing should be at -15 and that my fuel pump is the problem. they say it is 10lbs low holding fuel pressure, well i bought a new fuel pump, oem from the dealer, and now my mileage is worse( i was geting about 164 mile to a full tank, now i am only getting 140 per full tank). i Have already changed the theromstat, dis a complete tune up and had a fuel injection cleaning done. does any one have any idea what my timing should be set at (i know is is set by the computer, but what is that setting) or have any suggestions on whay i am getting such bad gas milagem and what i can try next??? i cant afford this for 2 much longer

Re: 2001 Blazer Gas Mileage Problem

What kind of gas mileage do you get (the Avg Econ on the little overhead display)? I drive a 2001 Blazer too and I'm pretty sure I get 17.1 mpg, all my driving is in town, and I'm a very conservative driver. A few things I've done are replace the fuel filter, replace the airfilter (you dont need to buy any special kit, just buy a new filter) and I hacksawed the snorkel off the front of the air box then hacksawed the bottom of the airbox off.

I do not have the overhead display as on option on my blazer, but i figure it out every time i fill up and it varies between 9-11 miles per gallon and i just replaced the filters less thsn 6 months ago....when i did a complete tun up

Re: 2001 Blazer Gas Mileage Problem

someone said to check my tire pressure. i had on of the guys i work with check it and all my tires were way low. i jave 31x10's on the blazer which call for 50psi cold, when he checked them the front tires had 21psi and the rear tires has 18psi. can that really account for the bad gas mielage?

that could be the drop in mpg that you noticed. Rolling around those big of tires prob don't help all that much either. Can't help you with the timming though.

Re: 2001 Blazer Gas Mileage Problem

according to mitchell on demand it should be 5 degrees below TDC
fuel pressure should be 60-66psi
injector resitance should be 11-14 ohms
tps sensor output should be 1.0-4.0 volts
firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2

hope that helps

If its a ZR2 15-18 is normal.Air up your tires and go from there.

Re: 2001 Blazer Gas Mileage Problem

I was getting 16mpg with Bosch platinum spark plugs. My mechanic sugested going back to stock AC plugs. Says GM specs them for a reason. I did so and mileage increased to 21 mpg highway if I keep it under 70 mph. Hope this helps.

Re: 2001 Blazer Gas Mileage Problem

You could probably do better than that with a 5 speed. I do with an auto.

Re: 2001 Blazer Gas Mileage Problem

It's not bad... for an auto, but with a 5 speed you have more potential. A few mods can up your mileage quite a bit.

Re: 2001 Blazer Gas Mileage Problem

try changing the oxygen sensors...

I did a complete tuneup after 200K and noticed no change in mileage.... i'm thinking about changing the oxy sensors...

tuneup was plugs/wires/cap/rotor/pcv valve and airfilter... all was AC Delco except for the airfilter (K&N - Recharge...)

Re: 2001 Blazer Gas Mileage Problem

these and 2.5/2.8 love stock parts.

i got 4 spark plugs from walmart and a fuel filter and air filter on my 2.5l 1st gen 2wd i traded in on my new 00 gmc jimmy 4wd

well it was doing just fine, got about 26mpg highway driving mad, and then after the dealership replaced ignition module, i started having problems. computer was bad and still was after i replaced it i guess.

drove it at 55mph constant after dealership.. spit and sputtered.. CABOOM spark plug tip disentigrated. put another one in.. same thing, same plug, same cylinder.

put some acdelco plugs in and it ran better, and got better mileage by 1-2
