2000 Blazer pop and gas smell?

Hi - new to the forum a LOT of great info here. I just bought a 2000 Blazer LT (so you'll probably be hearing a lot from me ) with the SES light on - went to Autozone before buying and the only code was Fuel sensor so I figured no big deal to fix... maybe? Well, I've noticed a fuel smell and a "hollow-ish" metallic pop sound about just under a minute after shutting off the engine. I'm guessing it's related to the SES code and the fuel tank? Any ideas what the particular issue is and (of course) how to fix it?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

change the fuel sensor?

are you sure the popping isnt the exhaust cooling down after driving?

No - it doesn't sound at all like the exhaust and comes from the left rear -- sounds quite a bit like thunking a 5 gallon gas can or also sounds like a big version the old oil-er cans that you pushed in on the bottom of to dispense oil .

And no I haven't changed the sensor yet - got a Haynes book (not very damned helpful) but haven't found that procedure therein. How's that done? I'm thinking maybe the fuel EVAP cannister is clogged or otherwise FUBARED -- but the damn Haynes book is vague and general as hell about where that is located. Anyone know or do I have to trace the fuel line?
