Trouble replacing ignition lock cylinder

I have gotten everything removed including the old cylinder but my problem is when i insert the new cylinder it will crank the truck and turn it off BUT it won't turn back to the lock position so i can remove the key. The cylinder is new and i can't figure out why it won't turn back. Has anybody else had trouble with the cylinder doing this? I was almost finished then thanks to this i got stopped in my tracks and now my truck is sitting half apart right now

Take a look at this diagram. You see the toothed shaft ?
It may be that it has moved passed it's stop and is getting
jammed. Also you'll want to make sure the steer wheel
lock shaft isn't causing any problems.

Do you mean the actuator rack? How do i fix that? Do i just get the cover off and reposition the geared piece by hand?

Re: Trouble replacing ignition lock cylinder

You should not have had to remove anything to damage or take apart the actuator to get it miss located. Did you replace the key cylinder because of the very problem you are having now? If so then the actuator could be broken or the plastic gear. I have seen the actuator broken but never the plastic gear unless it was a theft. Or the spring for the lock rod could be broke and jambing it.
Or....
The ignition switch could be bad and causing it to jamb the rod that is attached to the actuator.
You should be able to feel the rod that rides on top of the steering colum tube from down below. As you turn the key to off is the rod bending/bulging?

Re: Trouble replacing ignition lock cylinder

Got it. I just took out the screws holding the column and messed with the actuator rack a little and re-set it.

Re: Trouble replacing ignition lock cylinder

What was the orignal problem with the cylinder? On my 99 S10 the key now goes in the cylinder but it won"t turn the switch. It used to go with a little wiggle but now it won't move at all. Any tips or instructions on replacing would be very helpful.
THANKS

Re: Trouble replacing ignition lock cylinder

My problem was that the cylinder would turn without a key. And considering i didn't have keys to my door locks that was a major problem.

If you don't want it i'd be more than happy to take it off your hands. Just give me your address and i'll come by with a trailer and tow it to my house

Re: Trouble replacing ignition lock cylinder

Check the little gear inside where the cylinder goes. I had to mess with mine using a small flathead screwdriver to get it set back the way it needed to be.

Re: Trouble replacing ignition lock cylinder

Isn't there a safety release switch behind the keyhole that needs to be hooked up properly to release the key to the position where you can take it out? I know my 88 has this.
