How cheap and how easy. I can tell you to stay away from the chips sold on sh!t-E-Bay. They are usualy nothing more than a inexpensive resistor to fool your truck into thinking the air is cold.
You can though free up any potencial it has to breath by installing a cold air intake and free flowing exhaust including headers. That stuff is not toooo expensive

Re: Tips about 4.3 easy and cheap hp

larger exhaust alone makes a HUGGGGGGGGE improvement with a stock vin code Z TBI 4.3

my 91 has a larger than stock custom y pipe and splitsinto duals with long pipe mufflers and long chrome tips and it sounds nice and the engine runs VERY STRONG

very fast it outruns anything i want to that is stock or virtually stock out there on the streets if i want it to

VERYYYYY surprising for a stock 4.3

and thats the onlymod mechanically on the entire truck is this exhaust system

so i definitely vote for an exhaust pipe diameter increase and to make less restriction

the easier air can get into and out of the engine then the better it will run

more efficiently

good luck

Pretty much what's already been mentioned. On the TBI intakes a cold air, or even an open element is an improvement over what's on it. You'll need a non drop base air cleaner if you get an open element, I recommend one of the smaller diameter ones like a 10in. You can bump your timing up to around 6 degrees, this is free and helped my stock 4.3 out quite a bit. The exhaust on these trucks is pretty weak from the factory, you're best off stepping up to a larger diameter exhaust from the manifolds back or better yet throwing on headers then working from there. One of the things that's hardly ever mentoined is if you pop off your distributor cap and see an ignition module marked 048 swap it for one from a full size G20 van, the module should be marked 369. The 048 modules will retard timing on their own starting at 3000rpm it was GM's way of putting a very basic "rev limiter" in. The previous owner of my truck beat many a 4.3 and when I purchased it it had the 369 module installed in it. That module went bad and I swapped in an 048 module I had laying around, the truck lost power big time.

369 module interesting i just checked the zone on this one and the g20 lists the dr140 module which is the same as the dr140 module they sell for a 91 z motor. do you have any more info on this mod as i have issues with retarding at higher engine revs? i have a multi spark box and a blaster coil and still have these issues and ive been through more modules than you would believe

To identify a 369 module from a 048 module you need to look at the top of the module it should be written there in white, it'll also be lightly stamped on the bottom. These modules are an interchange part now as Gm didn't bother to pay attention when it switched over. The best bet for one would be to dig through a junkyard and grab yourself a module from a full size van. I know for a fact my S10 had one as well so it would probably be a good idea to check those. I've verified this module problem with the timing in my Camaro also, with the 048 module it didn't seem to want to rev over 4700 or so it would kind of plain out. I swapped back to my MSD module that has tested bad repeatedly and it will now rev strong to the limiter. If you want an aftermarket module check out the DUI ignition modules, I hear good things about them.
