yes the bigger the better. or find a buddy that already has one. i tried using a 20 gal for primer, and i hardly got one swipe before it was filling again

Yeah u need a big compressor/tank combo with a good water trap because you DONT want water in your paint.

Ya, you need to match your gun to your compressor.

i use a 110 v 30 gal with a water trap, make sure you use a regulator as well. and read the manual with the gun before you do anything

i blew up a siphon feed gun when i hooked it up to 120 psi

Yes you need a regulator, most compressors have one any way, a water trap is a must, but they are cheap, but you don't need a big compressor with a Hvlp gun. A 3hp 10 gallon set up will work a gravity fed Hvlp gun great.

But you do need so paint knowledge. paint guns need proper cleaning if you want them to work more then 0nce, And Most paint needs to be thinned or reduced to get a good finish.

Don't expect your first attempt to be your only one. but i've found he longest part of the process with my gun(s) is the prep work (masking, color Mixing, thinning) and the clean of the gun... easily 20 minutes to disassemble, clean and reassemble.

My first gun cost me $26 and i still use it 5 years later. Its a med size sprays from 2" wide to 8" wide. but now i run a "touch up" gun too.

Even with a top of the line HVLP gun if you are painting a whole car you need way more then a 10 gallon compressor! Now if you are painting small parts, even a fender or a bumper then ya, but a whole car.......no.

yes... my small compressor only might kick in 3 times those guns only run at 17-35 psi never ever ever had a problem, Now if you don't use thinner thats a different story. Its way better of a option then a rattle can...

Flat paint comes out smooth and super even.

In no way does your compressor only kick on 3 times while painting a whole car! I've got a 30 gallon and run about 15-20psi on my HVLP when spraying most paints and it kicks on from time to time.

I second that. I don't know how many times it runs, but my 30 gal. runs alot when I'm painting. I use a water trap at the compressor & a small water filter at the gun. It's a DeVilbiss HVLP. The pressure is low of course, but it uses alot of volume compared to a siphon gun.

Ive got a 10 Gal and even doing small stuff like grinding it kicks on after 3 seconds lol.I know this is not an accurate comparison but still,no way your comp only kicks in 3 times with ANY sprayer.

Re: Thinking of spray painting my s10 post pics of yours if you used spray bomb

Grinding is the worst... my small compressor won't run one worth a crap.

Maybe its the way i've been painting. I give my truck about 8-10 light coats... I do tend to do the roof hood and trunk areas on separate days... so ya i guess that is almost half the car.

I guess the point i way trying to make is.

If you want to paint a car yourself, you don't have to bust out a fat chunk of change to get better results then rattle cans.

Meh, that's not what I was getting at, but since you ask. My words come out wrong on the web... I don't really like it or want to spend much time on it so naturally I'm going to mess up here and there.

Is stillsay there is nothing wrong with it... In person I'm more mature about things, I apologize for shoring your thread and am now going to attempt a successful post.

I say you should just save up for a professional paint job. Or find a painter to help teach you... I don't really know because I'm far from ready to even think about paint.

Re: Thinking of spray painting my s10 post pics of yours if you used spray bomb

One quart of Gloss White Rustoleum (oil-based) thinned with about 25% mineral spirits and applied with a fine-foam smooth roller, two coats over primer, and the grill was sanded, primed, and then sprayed with satin finish rattle-can black. Needs one more coat, but I don't intend to mess with it until next spring when it warms up again outside. It's a daily beater, not a show or race truck, and I only paid $750 for the thing in the first place, so I really don't care to dump a bunch of money into the thing for the sake of appearance or performance.

This is almost a year after the paintjob, by the way, when I gave it another waxing. The road debris and stuff on the Loop 202 is brutal, so I have rock chips galore on my bumper and windshield.

Re: Thinking of spray painting my s10 post pics of yours if you used spray bomb

Pretty much, from the windshield/doors forward, is all rattle can . . ., the driver's fender is 1/2 rattle can, pass is from another vehicle stock paint

Anyways I'd say that every part, except for the hood, is doable. The hood is just far too large of an area for any spray can to cover before the suitable area drys without creating lines. my hood looks good from some angles, and certain ones you can see the spray pattern. The bumpers/fenders are definitely doable.

IMO it's look 10X better than running the glossy black coat that came with the bed, and from 10+ feet away it looks fine. As far as doing parts of the body, well that will be tough as the hood is a horizontal surface, and I Think reflects less detail than the body, and is harder to see flaws in.
(awaiting paint toad wisdom)

Ya its to cold now, Its best to be in the high teens Celsius. I mean you COULD do it, but expect to redo it in the spring.

Might i suggest going over to the Willow park Auto-club. They have a paint booth you can rent... or they did.

IMO get a gun, spray bomb is just annoying as hell to try to lay over large surfaces, your fingers will hurt like a mofo, and every time to you run out/start a can you have to worry about dripping/proper spray issues

Here is mine when it was sprayed with krylon. It looked good the key to spraying a car is to use satin paint so you don't get the striped look.

Thats why your supposed to lock your converter on the dyno, cause when its unlocked its actually putting out more torque than is being applied. If it didnt do that it would simply be a fluid coupler.

Be that as it may, an automatic still suffers a significantly higher percentage of horsepower loss than a manual when comparing rear wheel horsepower numbers.
