Metal on metal screeching
Lately I have been getting a metal on metal screeching, it seems to occur when accelerating, through 2nd and 3rd gear, and is more prominant when turning left. However once I'm up to speed it goes away. It doesn't happen all the time but I've heard it at least once a day this past week. And it goes away if I let off the gas. What could it be?
also, it's a 1991, 2.5, 5 speed, and in the past 3k kms I've replaced the tensioner and serp belt, so I don't think it's a belt problem. |

Re: Metal on metal screeching
i am just throiwing my opion in this but another good thing you should check is the tranny level. I don't think that that its the problem but you said it what making a metal on metal screeching through second and third. I was thinking is that the tranny is low on fluid.

Re: Metal on metal screeching
could it be the rear wheel bearing? i checked for play in wheels and there is a fair bit of wobble on the rear passenger wheel when i put hands in 6 and 12 position and press back and forth. speaking of which, do you guys think it would be safe to drive it 3300 kms like this? (i'm heading west in 2 weeks)

Re: Metal on metal screeching
wow really, I wouldnt think it should wobble at all. I had a front wheel bearing go out on me once while driving, it is NOT FUN AT ALL!!!! I would definatly have that replaced before i drove it anywhere else period.

Re: Metal on metal screeching
Anyone got any tips for checking the actual bearing, i'm thinking it's big job that will require me to go rent some tools.

Re: Metal on metal screeching
If its just the outer bearing you should be able to pull it out with a slide hammer or maybe a puller in the worst case. Press the new one in by smacking it with a 2x4.

Re: Metal on metal screeching

Re: Metal on metal screeching
I had a nasty scraping on my truck recently when braking and turning right. I had all the wheels off and brakes checked. Turns out my exhaust box was scraping the drive shaft. I can't believe we'd missed it.

Re: Metal on metal screeching
sounds -kinda- like what's going on with my tranny... is there any change when you step on the clutch pedal?
ive got a bad input shaft on the transmission, so it grinds in 3/4/5 under heavy acceleration, and it also grinds if its just idling without the clutch engauged. |

Re: Metal on metal screeching
throwing one more out there. Check the motor mounts. Under load the mighty "iron duke" 2.5 likes to flip on its head if you have a broken motor mount. Fan comes up and rubs on the shrowd, exhaust binds up, and a bunch of other bad shit happens."turning left" is what caught my eye

Re: Metal on metal screeching
left motor mounts were prone to break first. that would explain noise on left turns the engine is tipping on its side a bit. Load up the engine and have a set of eyes watch the engine rock
