GMC Sonoma SST ??

Hi! I just registered to see if anyone here knows anything about a truck I'm considering buying.

It's a 1991 GMC Sonoma 2WD short bed with plastic placard looking trim along the bottom and front bumper with GMC SST in red letters. It's not like the Syclone although similar, just bulkier looking trim.

I haven't been able to find any info on an SST Sonoma.

It's black with red, 4.3 & 5speed.

Anybody know?

This doesn't mean there isn't one out there though. I've just never seen one.

Re: GMC Sonoma SST ??

i actually saw an SST yesterday, going down hwy 9, near myrtle beach, SC...it caught my eye, and i was telling my friend that i had never seen or heard of one of those myself...so this thread definately caught my eye, but it was white, couldn't tell much about it, as i didn't really notice the emblems til it was passing by us, on the other side of the 4 lane...but it looked sonoma GT'ish...with the red lettering down low on the doors.

sdime98 ~ This truck is in North Myrtle Beach on Hwy 90 [intersects with Hwy 9]! I've never seen the white one you mentioned but these trucks are [or were where you saw the white one] within 5 miles of each other.

Re: GMC Sonoma SST ??

gotcha, made a quick trip to MB last night with a friend, he has family down there on vacation for the 4th, from up north, and he asked me to tag along for the trip, it was somewhere on the strip of #9, between 701, and 905...

maybe this will provide some insight.

Re: GMC Sonoma SST ??

Cool, Thanks! I'll have to keep an eye out for that white one. I'm just over the SC/NC line in Sunset Beach, NC and primarily travel through the Myrtle Beach area.

I figured it was something to do with Choo Choo because the wheels looked like the ones I've seen on Choo Choo van conversions but I didn't know if they were original or not.

I sure wish I could see the original sales brochure but the one linked to the site is not correct.

THANKS!

Humm. First time for me. I bet getting replacement cladding would
cost a small fortune if you could find it. Wonder what's under the
hood ? A Z or W engine..Very interesting.

Re: GMC Sonoma SST ??

it would probably look sleeker if the front bumper was brought down to were it should be, being pushed up and back like that makes it look like a snowplow

Re: GMC Sonoma SST ??

Okay, I'll own the aforementioned 1991 GMC Sonoma SST tomorrow [when the DMV opens]. It need some work but I figured it was worth the price. The clutch is weak and the A/C is cold but only blows out the defrost and floor vents not the dash vents. I suspect a vacuum issue but any knowledge on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

After I clean it up and straighten the bumper I'll snap some new photos

Re: GMC Sonoma SST ??

It's mine now and I've already made some headway.

My wife thinks I've gone crazy ~ I haven't had a project vehicle in 20 years! She can not see the beauty in it but will, I promise.

Replaced some vacuum line to make the idle lower and smooth

Replaced the broken "popped" pop rivets in the front bumper so now it's where it should be

Took off the A/C ~ heater control to find the multi-port vacuum connection loose causing a vacuum leak ~ now COLD A/C blows out the dash vents where it should

Clutch has a hydraulic leak, likely in the slave cylinder ~ haven't been under it yet but the clutch is strong [spongy pedal ~ low clutch fluid].

4.3, 5 speed, 131k original miles, solid body and major mechanicals, cold A/C, needs cosmetics but for $500 bucks ~ a steal in my book!

Re: GMC Sonoma SST ??

Yes I'd say that's a good deal as well. Once you
get it fixed and cleaned up, it should prove to
be a interesting curiosity topic to those who think
they know s-10 and s-15 trucks. Long live R-12 freon.

Still the coldest stuff around as far as I'm concerned.

Re: GMC Sonoma SST ??

Okay, here's a pic taken today. Notice the bumper straightening, removal of those ugly short bed rails and some minimal clean up.

I just don't like that front bumper ~ it looks so bulky ~ kinda like a push bar on a tow truck. I'm thinking of changing it out to a Syclone style if it will look right/match with the rest of the cladding or maybe a stock bumper with a lip spoiler?

Okay, the wheels ~ they've been mismatched somewhere along the line. What I mean is they're directional wheels. I think the "spokes" should face rearwards like the rear one not facing forward like the front one. Your thoughts?

I'm going to have the tires removed and all wheels facing the correct way once I know which way. I'm missing 1 center cap ~ probably ever find one.

I'll likely change out the wheels/tires when I decide what might look best. I'm not much into the new wild looking wheels or 20's so more of an IROC wheel or some other period correct GM wheels.

I've been driving it all day ~ it's actually a fun little truck. It does need cosmetics but seems strong mechanically. I need to replace the clutch slave, it's leaking a bit. I took off the door panels and adjusted the windows that were slightly off track and hard going up ~ work great now although they're manual [geez, I didn't realize how much power windows spoils ya!]

Re: GMC Sonoma SST ??

imho i think 16 inch iroc 85-87 wheels, soft tonneau, 2\3 drop (just enough to give it the attitude of a syclone, also i think this will help with the snow plow effect) done! oh and something to scrub the wax buildup off the plastic on the wheel openings

p.s. if your really going all out a cowl hood wood complete the onsomble

Re: GMC Sonoma SST ??

I like the IROC wheels but damn they're a bit pricey ~ eBay.

No cowl hood for sure ~ lowering a bit, maybe? but I think larger wheels w/ low profile tires might help the looks enough.

It needs painted and that white residue isn't coming off, short of sanding it off. The texture on the ground effects/cladding is a bit rough.

For now, any input on which direction the wheels that are on it would be correct?

Re: GMC Sonoma SST ??

forward would be agresive, backward i dont know it would look like later model sdimes

check craigslist i got a set of 16" iroc's with 2 new unmounted tires for $300

syclones were lowered by factory 2"

pict "wheels" shows the deal i got, pic "iroc2" is another members truck that looks sweet with those wheels

You can put the wheels either direction. Some people buy directional rims nowadays, such as the Centerline Archers, and I've seen them both ways. Whatever way you think looks best is the way you should put them on the truck. I think it looks best with the spokes facing backward.

baggedzq8: Cool, I really do like those. Thanks!

Speedy2222: Not that I know what SST means but they're 2 different trucks. I believe the Sonoma ST is a trim level?? I tried contacting Godfather Customs but got no reply as of yet.

ExtCab96S_Dime: Thanks! I was leaning towards rearwards spokes too and I did find one Choo Choo customs van online with the same wheels ~ spokes facing rearwards.

I'm having fun with this little truck. I'm surprised the 4.3 is that peppy! I almost didn't buy it but glad I did!

archers are not directional. a "directional wheel" has a left and right to them, the archers do not, at least the ones i bought for my tahoe were not available in rights and lefts, all 4 were the same

Oh, sorry, I knew they came all the same way, but I just meant wheels that have a direction to them. If that makes sense lol Basically not just straight spokes, but wheels that look like they point a certain way... I don't know how to explain it lol.

If anyone knows the correct link to the original ad/photographs please let me know.

I found this link: http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=31496 which is supposed to link to than original ad but it's just a photo of a plain Jane S10. Maybe someone here knows that poster?

I'd really like any info possible. Godfather Customs did not answer my e-mail inquiry and when I called they had no clue.

THANKS!
