Differences in 4.3?

I'm looking for a first gen s10 or sonoma and trying to figure out the changes in engines from year to year. I was going to go with the 2.8 and maybe do a v8 swap in the future but I'm afraid I will get over my head. I was curious about the hp ratings on the 4.3 from year to year. I was looking at a 91 sonoma with the 4.3 and 700r4. I have read some posts in here about a 195 hp rating in 92 and 93 but was that standard? If not, how do you tell the difference in the two 4.3's?

Re: Differences in 4.3?

92-93 were the only ones that had either CMFI or TBI. The CMFI was rated @195 HP. The TBI were rated @160 begining in 89 and in 88 were 150hp. But there was a turbo 4.3 in 91 that had 280hp.

Re: Differences in 4.3?

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I know about the turbo version but I'm too broke for what they are going for,lol. I tried bidding on a sonoma gt on ebay but its being ran up too. I just wasn't sure how common the 195 hp version was in 92 and 93. From what i read I guess it didn't come with the 5 speed. If I bought the 160 hp version is there much that can be done about increasing power without tearing the engine apart? The 91 sonoma I'm looking at says it has a 10 bolt 373 rearend. Is that factory? The rest of the truck seems stock.

Re: Differences in 4.3?

I have a 93 with the 4.3 cmfi but it has a 4l60e not a 700r4 trans,u will know it for sure mine says vortex on intake where a tbi does not.if u find a cmfi 4.3 i think you'll be happy with the power for awhile then u will be ready for a v8.mine came with 373 gears in it too.Mine is a sonoma sle.Hope this helps.

Re: Differences in 4.3?

What if the 8th digit in the vin is a Z? Not X or W.

Re: Differences in 4.3?

Post #2 is a little off. It should be Z instead of X. There are no X engine codes on a 1st gen.

Z = TBI

you can also tell the difference just by glancing at the engines, that they are different. the CPI engine will have an intake manifold on it that looks similar to the tuned port intake. the TBI engine will have a big round air filter and air filter assembly on the top of the engine.

i cant find any pics for ya... but its really easy to tell the difference between TBI and CPI

Re: Differences in 4.3?

Does any one know how a stock 91 4.3 would hold up to 4-6 psi from a small turbo

Re: Differences in 4.3?

A stock TBI 4.3 will eat 4 to 6 psi of boost with no more real wear than no boost at all, they make 160hp, the internals are safe to WAY higher levels than that so long as the the tuen is proper
