Couple Questions.... 1991 4.3L auto
It running hot, its reading at about 230 degrees? (has a 196? (its one ninty something anyway) degree t-stat is in it) Seems too hot for me, any guesses why? Anything common on these trucks that make them run hot?
Also how do you put gear oil in the rear diff.? Everyother car/truck ive worked on there's a plug in an obvious spot. Maybe i just overlooked it, but my differential is leaking and id like to fill it back up before it goes bad. thanks |

Re: Couple Questions.... 1991 4.3L auto
The first signs that a viscous fan clutch is failing are the obvious: Noise at the fan indicating a failure or the engine starts running hotter and a/c performance drops. A simple test is to spin the fan as hard as you can on an engine that has not been started that day. If the fan rotates more than 1.5-3 times or with little resistance, you can bet the clutch is bad. You should feel some resistance and the fan may spin up to three times, depending on the ambient temperature/if the vehicle has been running recently. This is not a sure fire way but it is the safest and a good indicator.

If you're looking at the rear pumpkin from the yoke side it's on the left side. It's a recessed allen head threaded plug 1/2 way up & in between the ribs on the housing.

Re: Couple Questions.... 1991 4.3L auto
i can barely get it to spin 1/2 a turn let alone 3 times around. anyhow, since im running at 230', im probably going to try a lower temp t-stat. should i get a 160 or 180?
i'd like to have it running as close to the normal operating temperature as possible |

Re: Couple Questions.... 1991 4.3L auto
a 180 your engine (providing the radiator is good) will run about 190 and not send the fi system into a frissy thinking the motor isnt warm yet causing your mpg to take a crap
also check your hoses to make sure on of them hasnt become clogged due to the lining getting old, heater hoses also sledge-o-matic!!! |
