A/C Bypass Pulley ?'s
Alright, so the A/C compressor on my 2.8 started making odd noises the other day. I looked into replacing it and it will cost a pretty penny. The guy at the parts store suggested that I get an A/C Bypass Pulley till I had the money to drop on the new A/C stuff. So I removed the compressor and went to put the bypass pulley into the spot where the compressor was and there lies the problem. The pulley doesn't work. The mounting bracket on the pulley is about and inch to an inch and a half too wide and doesn't line up anywhere. Has anyone else tried to use this part? The bypass pulley is made by HELP! and the parts guy has called them and they are looking into why it doesn't fit this application. I guess it is a universal fix for the 4.3 as well. (Maybe even a fix for a V8 but not sure)
Just thought I would ask as I wait for an answer from the parts store. Does anyone know for sure if I can just get a smaller belt to put in there without my compressor? Thanx in advance! |

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!
![]() Yeah, that is the exact piece-0-junk I have as well. Oh well, at least I am not alone. So what are you thinking about doing? There are a few options for belts and am wondering if you have tried the belt that is for the 2.8 without AC? Didn't know if we might be able to go that route. I know routing will be a little different but who knows...it might work. :P |

Re: A/C Bypass Pulley ?'s
I went to the junk yard and bought that pully from a non AC 4.3 for $10 and bolted it in. I'm not sure about the 2.8, but the only difference between a AC and non AC belt is a tensioner pully.

Re: A/C Bypass Pulley ?'s
Alright, so I went to the parts store and returned the pulley and bought a new belt. There is a routing diagram on the radiator for the belt with A/C and it shows how the routing is without A/C as well. I will be heading out there in a min to see how it works. I will let you know how it goes and I can snap a picture of the routing diagram along with the part # for the belt if it works.

Re: A/C Bypass Pulley ?'s
I have an R4 with the single groove pully off my 84 2.8. I got it new but every time the a/c was used a fuse blew because of the idle solenoid that kicks it up to keep the s.o.b. running. So I just unplugged the a/c and the compressor was never used. Its a new Delco. Not rebuilt or another brand. I will sell it for $50+ shipping.

Re: A/C Bypass Pulley ?'s
I say F* the pully. Take a string and make a new routing taking the pump out of the mix, get it as close to the exact length as possible. Once done run the string out flat and get the overall length, lets say 90". Go to the parts store and get a 900k6 or something equal. Usually they use the # in inches add a zero and for serp belts k5 or 6. Mine on my 4.3 is a k6. Im not sure if its gonna work on your 2.8 but my 91 4.3 had no probs. Hope it helped.

Re: A/C Bypass Pulley ?'s
Looks like the exact A/C bypass pulley I took off my 4.3
Get me the measurements hole-to-hole and I'll see if it's the same dimensions as the one I have. |

Re: A/C Bypass Pulley ?'s
I'm pretty sure the 2.8 does not share the same AC delete pulley as the 4.3. I don't care what the computer at autozone tells the brain dead jackoff behind the counter. We don't share the same compressors why would the pulley be the same.

Re: A/C Bypass Pulley ?'s
The 2.8 will use a (dorman numbers) 34224 and a 4.3 will use a 34152. But you really can't blame the idiots at autozone. All they know how to do is push keys on thier computer and where to look for the part on the shelf. Its the over paid computer programer that does not input the info correctly. And the one in the pic could have been misboxed and thats why it does not work. Last edited by MadMikeZ28 : 09-14-2008 at 05:25 PM. |

Re: A/C Bypass Pulley ?'s
HA!
Who needs the 11mm anyway. ![]() What you guys should do is contact Motor Might (help manufacture) and tell them your pullys do not fit correctly. They may help you out. Tell them their investors might not be happy to see thier stock drop. ![]() I can't see clearly what they are listed on the nasdaq as on the box label. |

I would have contacted the company and told them. They might have sent you the correct one.
And you did not have access to a machine to make a spacer for the bottom??? ![]() |
