3rd gen extreme rims on a first gen s15

picked up a set of extremes off my friends 3rd gen extreme, the test fit for the hubs was fine, no play, and the bolt pattern is correct, but my stock lug nuts wont grab what seems to be enough. its about 1/4 to 1/2 of the lug nut on the stud. so my question is: would i have to pop out the studs for longer aftermarket versions or just get the gen 3 extreme lug nuts?

You meen the last Xtreme style wheels? If so and you are putting them on a first gen, you will need to open the centers up on the rims because first gens used a bigger diameter hub.
Side note, it's Xtreme not Extreme, just so you know when you search.

Do the first style extreme wheels need the center opened up a bit as well to fit a first gen?

Yes, I believe all 98+ wheels have the smaller hub diameter.
