1987 Stepside S10?

Hello! nice site you have here.

I'm posting these pics to see if anyone has any information about trucks like these.

This is an 87, which I bought new in 1988.

It came with a 2.8, 7004R, and a fiberglass bed. there was a "park avenue" badge on the tailgate.

It lived a happy life with me until 1998.. it got hit hard in a chain reaction, and I couldn't save it.. When it died, it was on it's second 2.8, and third transmission.

when I bought it, I got some song and dance from the dealership about how rare they were, etc, etc.. I only saw one other one like it in my life ( an S15 painted the same way ), and I did see a red extended cab with the same bed, running around here in cleveland..

I just liked the way it looked, so I brought it home.. it was my first new vehicle.. anyway, here are the pics..any additional info would be helpful.

Re: 1987 Stepside S10?

to bad you lost that truck, they never actually made step side first gens so that was probably made by a shop special for the dealership, so ya that would make it rare, i think i saw a bed like that on the site before though..... so im sure there are more out there

Check out the rear bumper, isnt that tubed. GM never made a truck with that bumper to my knowledge. if that is the way you bought the truck then you a dealer special definitely

Re: 1987 Stepside S10?

A company in Tennessee was doing step side conversions too brand new trucks in the 70's & 80's. I had a 77 Toyota longbed with the conversion, and it had a tag on the door jamb, stating the company name and location, that did the work. All I remember is Tenn., since it was over 20 years ago when I had that truck. I'll see if I can find some pics, when I get home.

Re: 1987 Stepside S10?

the shape of the fenders is reminiscent of the late 70's to early 80's fullsize chevrolet stepside beds. the exterior cable and hook tailgate design is similar to the late-40's to early 50's chevrolet fullsize trucks. i've personally never seen a bed like that. you can search on here for information about the "wildside" beds, which were another aftermarket stepside bed made for 1st gen dimes. but i would have to agree that the bed on that truck was definitely a dealer option and did not come from the factory that way. dealerships occasionally like to offer special option packages that typically include some type of graphics and special body/interior components. thanks for posting up the pictures. it's always cool to see stuff like that

A friend of mine had a Luv truck with a bed like that in the late seventies or early eighties, can't remember just when. It was a steel bed with fiberglass fenders. After several years the truck rusted down and we used to kid him about having a good looking set of fenders.

nicelooking 1st gen. a guy we called coon had one of these in high school. he had it painted a nice dark blue and was lowered. he put a v8 in it and kept picking his driveshaft up out of the parking lot. then he and painted it using a three color scheme. look like sh*t. never saw it again. this was in bama.

yeah, maybe 3 and a half... it wasn't worth much for putting stuff in the back..although once I did have to trailer the shell of my camaro on a u - haul trailer with it.. that was kinda scary..

when my wife had it, she got ran into a few times from the back.. the hitch I had welded to the frame ( under the rear bumper) really helped in those situations.

In fact, she was driving it the day it was destroyed.. she was sitting at a light in traffic, when a dodge intrepid hit her at about 40.. my wife got pushed into two other cars who were also minding their own business.

my wife's head came through the rear glass, and the rear wall of the cab was bowed a bit too.. the bed cracked and tore in a bunch of spots, and the rear leafs were bent in a "U" shape.. thank god for the hitch, and tube bumper.. the intrepid needed a flatbed too..

what sucked was that at this point the ( replacement ) engine had only 20,000 miles on it, the tranny was new, and I had just replaced the front clip and hood.. I needed one more door, and then we were going to paint it.. ( the truck itself had well over 100K on the odometer)..

the damn insurance company ( not mine, the other peeps) wanted to give me squat for the truck saying it looked like a beater..I asked the guy - "how many cars have you built"? he says " none"..

I said " ok, let me explain - they're always different colors until you're done with 'em"..I then proceeded to light up his fax machine with receipts for everything I did to the truck, and pictures too..

so, long story short, I ended up getting a check for over two grand, which was well over their first offer, and over blue book too.

the wife ( and our dog) walked away unhurt..

if I ever find those pics, I'll post 'em up.

sorry for the story, I just tend to go off on tangents when I post..

At least your wife wasn't hurt.

Insurance companies do suck, I worry about some idiot hitting mine. An '85 S10 probably books out at about 1/2 what my tires cost me!

Re: 1987 Stepside S10?

New guy here, just found this site and this post....way cool. I've had mine for many years, purchased from original owner. From what he told me was it was a package from the local Chevy dealer and was done at Rockwood Conversions, that usually do vans. Mine is kinda a striper truck, rubber mats, but it has factory AC, but standard, non tinted glass, a dealer add on? The mighty iron duke, 5 speed. got it repainted in 97, drove it a few more years and it's been hibernation for about 8 or so years now. Plans were to V8 it, but something else always got in the way of it. Anyone find anymore info on them?

Here's a few pics. Enjoy...

Re: 1987 Stepside S10?

Hello great site. I found it trying to look for information on my 87 stepside. I think $600 was a great deal now that I know that its that rare. I bought it to fix up for my sons first truck.I have attatched pictures and the color was dark green with silver stripes all over. It took awhile to convince my son to leave the stepside on but he came to his senses.I am rebuilding a 327 to put in more for a show truck and so dad can play.

Re: 1987 Stepside S10?

That looks like one of those things where a van conversion company (they love to stripe the shit out of stuff) did work on that for the dealer. They just don't limit themselves to vans. Who else would put "Jeep" tail lights on it! A local conversion company used to send the new vehicles they damaged to the shop I used to work at.

Did it have non OEM seats or dash inserts or anything like that? Cup holder on the tranny tunnel?
You could search the area for van conversion shops but like the one here, when vans became less popular so did the conversion work.

If I acted like some of the people here do and ran to someone when ever my feelings were hurt I would have been called a sissy and then ridiculed for that as well. I suppose I just grew up in a time when we were all tougher and turned out to be men and women instead of staying crying children.

I've never seen one before either. I work at a salvage yard here in Indiana. Lo and behold, within the last two months I have bought TWO.

One of them is going to be a donor for my '95 Sonoma V-8 project. The odd thing is, one is aluminum with fibre flares, the other is all fibre.

are you talking about choo-choo customs in chattanooga? they are shut down now, they used to do the m/c ss and el/c ss front ends and other wild stuff.

Re: 1987 Stepside S10?

I too have one of these, i just bought from a guy with the V-8 conversion already done to it. It had a 305 but i'm now putting a 350 into it. It also came to my attention that the rear has a different rear end than the normal s-10 trucks, i believe it's a 4x4 blazer rear end, but not sure whether it's a K5 or s10 Blazer. It's also got a steel bed and sides, but the rest is glass. I'll post pictures up later tonight if i get a chance....

I passed by a red one in st.louis the other day. It was probably one of the nicer box s10s I have seen in a while. Just really clean

This is what I am working on new fenders put on, cab is out of Alabama and the box is the one Rockwood Conversions did in 1988 so Im getting there welded up front and rear bumpers I just want something differant from all the cookie cutter S10's
