Re: Project: 1995 s10 SAS

So my next step is getting my shocks mounted. I know Tim has his hoop things but what did others do? Also how'd you mount them TO the axle. I was thinking F250 towers but the dealer near me can't get them for some dumb ass reason. And the only place online I've been able to find them is at Parts Mike for like $17 each BEFORE shipping.
Anyone know where to get them cheaper?
Pictures would be good of mounting. Thanks

I cut the stock D30 tabs off when I was stripping the axle. I didn't like how low they hung.

I ordered F250 shock towers off of a Ford Dealership web site for $11 a piece. They should be here either the beginning or middle of next week.

Your next step should be getting your damn 4WD to work, you can wheel without shocks

You can but its not good, especially if the truck starts axle wrapping or kicking out big boulders causing it to bounce. I just had it happen to me last week and it costed me a rear driveshaft.I have shocks on the back but there both blown out.

I was going up a loose hill(in 2 wheel drive like an idiot..lol) it started kicking out rocks axle wrapping and bouncing up and down very hard, and then I heard a a couple big Bangs. It sounded like I blew the ring and pinion at first cause i heard a couple of bangs, but the driveshaft mustve hit the floor a few times before it fell out of the slip yoke. My buddy jumped out and told me my driveshaft twisted in 2. Ive gone up this hill in 2wd a couple of times, but thats when my shocks were good. So yeah, shocks really do help out when it comes to that stuff.

Re: Project: 1995 s10 SAS

Getting 4wd is pretty easy. The drive shaft is all made up. All I have to do is get the transfer case yoke changed. If I get my shocks on I can take it to a mechanic and be like "hey take this off real quick" or find someone close with air tools.

I know you did, you also came late at night so using tools that are loud wasn't a good idea. I'm gonna borrow my buddy's 19.2 Volt electric one. Maybe it'll work, if not once I get shocks on it I'll just bring it somewhere and ask to have them take it off real quick

Once the truck is on it's own feet you flex it out and see what your biggest compressed/extended measurements are. Then you find something that will work.

or you could do like i did and just get the longest shock you can find. then when you flex it out you can figure out how to mount it to make the travel work for you. FYI, i am running 13.5" travel Doetsch Tech 8000 series shocks and i am happy with them. they are fairly inexpensive too, $44.40 each right from doetsch http://www.shocksandsuspension.com/p...sp?item=3&dc=1

You know what else is nice? The BRAND NEW locker I just won on eBay! I got it for $193.33 shipped. It's a Detroit EZ Locker. I can't wait to put it in, so I'll have front Detroit and rear Trac-Lock.
I'm excited.

Re: Project: 1995 s10 SAS

My classes start up this week. If I don't have any plans this Friday I'm sure I can make a run out to Colchester and get one.
BTW if people can't figure it out from my post the locker is for the Dana 30.

Re: Project: 1995 s10 SAS

So has anyone installed a Detriot EZ locker? Is it as EZ as the name sounds? I know it'll come with instructions but I just want to know if there's any weird problems that may come up while doing the install. Also don't forget my Dana 30 is from an 88 YJ so it has the auto disconnect.

Re: Project: 1995 s10 SAS

Update: Today some good progress was made. I had a buddy of mine come over and weld my perches on for me. He took almost two hours doing it and assured me that the welds would last longer than he would live. I also changed my front output yoke on the transfer case. So all that is left to do is wait for my shock mounts to come in then weld them on. THen it's TEST TIME! So here's hoping they come in SOON, I ordered them a few days ago.
Of course I'll have pictures a.s.a.p when the shocks are done.

Re: Project: 1995 s10 SAS

It took that long for 2 reasons.
One: He's like 61 and kept saying he's "fat" so moving around was difficult
Two: for most of it the axle was under the truck, just not bolted in so that we could tack it to keep the caster angle correct.

I don't really care that it took a long time. It's DONE and that's all that matters to me. Now I'm just waiting on parts.

Re: Project: 1995 s10 SAS

I do too. The story behind him is he's a guy that works at Bond Auto (a local auto parts store) Every time I go in there he makes some crack about how I'm causing trouble or "they gave me a day pass out of prison." So one day I brought in my square tube drive shaft to get the Ujoint replaced. I brought it in as a reference to make sure I got the right one. He looked at the welds my buddy Zach did and said how they sucked, and if I ever needed anything done better to let him know. So on Friday I went in and took him up on his offer and he said he'd come do it Sunday. So he did, and I'm very grateful he took his time out to come help me.
I will say though, I've never herd someone swear at a Dana 30 more than him in such a short amount of time. It was comical.
