D30 steering problem.

I have the D30 under the blazer and the long arms done, but the steering won't hook up. I used a cherokee pitnam arm but the arm is to far back it sits over top of the diff. Do I have to move the box forward or something? Thanks for the help and all my research told me the steering was a direct bolt up.

Re: D30 steering problem.

You can use a steering box from a early 90's RWD astrovan. Its a direct bolt in and will move the pitman arm 180 degrees to what you have now. To see if thats what you need, just unbolt your pitman arm and turn it 180 degrees.

Re: D30 steering problem.

steering is a bolt up if you keep the axle in the same place. but it sounds like you moved it forward, or you wouldnt be having this problem. from the sounds of it, you need an astro steering box. its the same, other than the arm points forward instead of rearward.

beat me to it...

and be sure not to drive it with the pitman arm 180* on the stock box, or it will turn left when you steer right.

The axle is sitting center of front wheel well, I used ford coil buckets off of a 94 explorer and the D44 and D30 out of a 87 cherokee. The arms are made out of .095 tubing. The blazer is a 97, and the pitnam arm is sitting on top of the front Diff. Thanks, I think the astro box will work because I have the arm on backwards and it lines up great (but steers backwards.) I just didn't find that when I researched this build.

Re: D30 steering problem.

i ended up moving my front axle forward somewhere between 4" and 6" and i could have used the stock box if i didnt have reverse steering. the end of my pitman arm is about centered on my axle tube.

Re: D30 steering problem.

Ok I'm in pretty good shape and down to waiting for a astro box to be delivered. has anyone used a 97 transfer case with the slide on yoke and the cv joint, of did you change to a older transfer with a double cardian knuckle. I don;t think this cv knucle on the factory front shaft is going to flex enough to hook up to the D30. Has anyone else had this problem. Thanks for any help. I'll get pics up soon.

Re: D30 steering problem.

Finally got it out of the garage today, 9 inches of lift. We made the long arms, used explorer coil buckets, D30 and D44 axles, astro box, 6 in cherokee front springs, spring over and 3 in blocks in back, and a Dakota rear rubber brake line. Wow lots of different parts and got all my help here. Been lurking for a year so I finally decided to do the build. Just ended up being for a buddie.

Re: D30 steering problem.

is that factory jeep steering linkage? it seems odd to have inverted Y linkage on a solid axle. inverted T style where the tie rod connects both tires and the draglink connects to that is more common.

Re: D30 steering problem.

that has got to cause alignment issues with articulation. toe would not be constant like it would be if there was a conventional tie rod.

They also make the regular TSL's in radials too. I just cant tell if I see those weird side knobs that are on the SSR's from the picture or not.
