Won't go into 4WD

1997 Jimmy, V6, AT. 100K miles.

Attempted to put into 4WD the other day on my way to work but nothing happened. I pushed the dash switch repeatedly and it finally went into 4WD High. All was well until I tried to get it out of 4WD and back into 2WD. No luck. Brought it to a garage and the mechanic somehow got it back into 2WD but he told me that the dash switch needed to be replaced, which I did. The 4 WD still did not work properly. It would go in and out of 4WD Low just fine but when I pushed the switch for 4WD High the lights on the dash switch would blink alternately between high and low for a half dozen times and then revert back to 2WD. The mechanic told me that he thought it was the actuator switch on the transfer case so I had him replace that. He told me after replacing the actuator switch that it still would not go into 4WD so he put the original actuator switch back and told me to bring it to a transmission specialist. He said that he cheched the vacuum lines and they were OK. Now when I press the 4WD buttons nothing happens at all, Neither 4WD High or 4WD Low work.

Other than this problem the car runs great and has never given me any problems in the past. The 4WD has always worked and there are no strange or unusual noises. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

Tell your so called mechanic to keep on replacing parts...Sooner or later he'll get lucky.

Also tell him to figure out what the TCCM is, where it is, how to pull codes from it, and how to clear those codes. Then look at the encoder motor...That'll cost about 200 clams unless he's crazy enough to get it from the chevy dealer..and about another 200 clams to install it..

.:dunno:
