trany swap Questions

ok first off i did a search and i didnt find anything that look'd like it could help me out.

what my question is:

i have a sbc 400 over .40 to a 408, the trany i have in it right now is a built 350. i want to swap it out for a 700r4 that way i have 2 more gears for better MPG. i want to know if 1-it will bolt up and 2-what year trany should i get cause i have heard that some are computer operated and other arent. as you can tell i dont know anything about trany's so any help would be great!

thanks

Re: trany swap Questions

it will bolt up. And all pre-94 trannies are non computer controlled.

88 up used a slightly different valve body, and are supposedly stronger.

if it has the name "700-R4" it is non-computer. if it is named "4L60e" it is electronic.

Re: trany swap Questions

I'm no auto guy (see user title) but I think an early 90's will be your best bet. like from a camaro or s10.
