Royal Purple OR Amsoil??!!

im gonna be changing my manual trans fluid this weekend.
what would you guys recommend for fluid?
i can get royal purple and amsoil cheaper then the GM stuff.

I've been using Amsoil for about 12 years with no problems. Are you going to use the syncromesh oil?

both are quality products, you cant go wrong with either one, personally im a lucas guy, i use their stuff pretty much exclusively

Make sure you get the correct compatible synchromesh fluid. There is more than 1. I know the synchromesh number for mine (NV1500) was on the back label of the Amsoil bottles. Don't know about the others.

I'm running Royal Purple in my truck. It shifts much smoother and I love this stuff. I even use the motor oil.

Let me know if I can help. I have the synchromesh in my truck now and it feels like the day I started driving it.
I've never run Royal Purple, but I've heard good and some bad. The worst I've come across is the corrosive tendencies that have been found from RP and Lucas.
You may never see an ill effect running RP, so don't take my word for it. Go with what you feel comfortable running.

I browsed some Virgin Oil Analyses (VOA) for RP and didn't see good add packs in the oil. I don't know if this is the current status of the oil, but the samples I saw were not anywhere close to an upper echelon oil add pack.
Check in on this first if you decide to run it.

i emailed RP and they said the fluid has all the additives and what not for my trans and attached the tech sheet here it is.

I'm sure RP does (actually from what I've seen personally, I know they do), as almost all of them have the additives in there; i.e. Magnesium vs. Zinc vs. Phosphorus, Sulfur, etc. The life of the oil and its effectiveness depend on which additives and the quantity that are there, besides the obvious quality of the oil structure and molecules themselves.

Just adding information and agreeing with you. I don't mind posting up some Used Oil Analyses (UOA) if you want to see what I mean.

you know, ive always wondered about amsoil.... just recently we had a customer come in with a ford diesel f350, he uses amsoil everything, oil, trans fluid, diff lube, the whole bit... he apparently has had the same oil in his engine for the last 50k, every few months he sends a sample in and they tell him if it needs changed or not, and so far they say to keep running it

this goes against everything ive ever been taught

Yeah, it is weird growing up in the 3 months or 3k mentality, but that facts are that there are some oils out there that are so advanced that it is literally almost the additives wearing out and the ultimate accumulation of insoluble particulars (dirt, etc.) that end up leading the oil to need to be changed. The molecules themselves can almost avoid being destructed for long, long periods of time under normal conditions.

My Amsoil jobber ran his Dodge Cummins 196,000 miles on the same oil. He used the bypass filter and sent off samples every 25,000 miles. After all of those miles his Amsoil was still better than a new bottle of Shell Rotella T.

what about the particulates in the oil? do you have to keep changing the filter at regular intervals?

Yes, the filter gets changed at 25,000 miles. This is a 1 micron filter and it removes almost everything that can get in the oil. You change the filter and take a sample, then add enough new oil to make up for what was lost in the filter change.

It's a bypass filter. It doesn't replace the original filter, it's an add on. It connects to an oil galley in the block and it filters bleed off oil and returns it to the pan. The origianl filter stays in place and still filters the oil that is going directly into the engine.

The Amsoil filters are 25,000 mile filters. You change them both at the same time. An Amsoil oil filter change would be the filter on the block, the bypass filter and enough oil to fill it up. Then send the sample in and see how well it's holding up.

This is best for trucks that hold a lot of oil. If you only have 5 quarts in the pan then this is going to cost you more money. If you have a truck that holds a few gallons of oil then this is the way to go because you don't have to dump all of that oil and put in new oil every time you change the filter.

Personally, I change my filter (Delco) at about 5000 miles (which is 4 times a year for me) using Amsoil. I know Amsoil makes a filter as does Mobil 1 that claim 6 months but they cost just as much (or more) than 2 regular filters. Also, I've found these "synthetic" filters are a bit harder to find. YMMV.

Even if Delco filter costs $4 and an AMSOIL filter runs you $10, you would buy $20 worth of Delco filters in the time it takes you to run 1 AMSOIL filter. Just saying...
