Rearend Swap in my V8 S10
Got a 95 S10 with a 350 in it. Stupid me thought I could get the original rear end that was drivin by a 2.2L to last a little while. Well.....nope. Snapped one of the axles. So....I'm wanting to do a rear end swap. Any suggestions on what will be the easiest swap and what will hold up the best?

8.5" out of 2wd blazer should just bolt in, and probably have disc brakes.
The other popular option is the 8.8" Ford rear end, it barely needs anything to bolt in and has 31 spline axles. You can find them for $150 ish too |

Re: Rearend Swap in my V8 S10
explorer ones are easiest yeah and cheaper, you can get them for 70 bucks here at one of the yards and did buy one recently for a 94 explorer, since the one under it broke inside somehow, i still have the broken one here sitting,. alot of them are 3.27 and LS equipped which is decent.
you probably just have too much tire traction + too much torque = snapped ahaft |

not every 8.8 is a 31 spline diff either.. if its a 28 spline would not pay more than 150. 31 spline from explorer or crown vic look to pay near 3-400. if it sounds to good to be true it probaly is.

PAW, put an Eaton Posi in the rear end that you have not. You won't be spinning one wheel anymore.
The only bolt in GM rear end that will be strong enough for abuse from a 350 is the 8.5 from a S truck or Blazer, which is a little hard to find. |

Re: Rearend Swap in my V8 S10
For the money, you can't go wrong with the explorer 8.8 rear. I've heard many times that its as strong, if not stronger, than a GM 12 bolt rear end.
Every 8.8 out of an explorer has 31 spline axles. I think the crown vic 8.8 would be too long and probably not near as easy installing as the explorer rear. I agree on the 8.5" though. If you can find one, I would go that way. Oh and I paid $200 for my 8.8 with disc brakes. They wanted $400, but I know some people there...and I've heard of many scrap yards asking $50 for them if you pull the yourself. Last edited by Svtzx555; 11-30-2009 at 10:45 AM. |

Re: Rearend Swap in my V8 S10
whats the width on the exploder 8.8 rearends? Do they need narrowed at all to achieve the correct width? And obviously i assume need redrilled for the correct Gm bolt pattern to still work... I already have wheels and dont feel like buying new ones for the rear.
