noob to rearends

Hello picked up an 85 s10 2.8 auto awhile ago and want to do the v8 swap....
Right now i have my eyes on a 350 .60 over and a 350 turbo trans and i know that the stock rearend cant handle it. I dont know that much about rearends so i need your help with this...

After reading ALOT of threads im still lost... At the moment i came to the conclusion that stock rearends are not worth rebuilding or are they.. All i read on here is to get a ford 9" or a 8.8 out of an explorer. I dont understand how they would work. Are they not longer then a stock s10 rearend. Im so lost on rearends completely. Please help me

Re: noob to rearends

they r wider so you have to have it narrowed.

the 7.5 rear is a hit or miss kinda thing. some last long time with no trouble and some last one trip down the track. Steve has a built 6ltr in his truck running on a 170k mile rear end.

Re: noob to rearends

Do you have a 2WD ro 4WD? The 4WD rear end is about 4 inches wider than the 2WD rear end. If you have a 2WD then just about any rear end that you get will have to be narrowed. Some 4.3 V6 trucks with the 5 speed had the 8.5 rear end, which is a good rear end to have. If you can't find one then the 8.8 Ford or truck 12 bolt are very good choices to build. I've built 9 inch Ford, truck 12 bolt, car 12 bolt and 8.5 rear ends for the S series trucks. When you do this there are some slight modifications required to make them fit. All of these rear ends have 3 inch axle tubes, so some modifications to the lower spring plates are required along with new u bolts for the 3 inch tubes.

The S-series 8.5 rears don't have 3" axle tubes!!! Stock 2.75" axle tubes on these!!!

Re: noob to rearends

Yes, I know. I was not talking about the S truck 8.5, which is a bolt in, but all of the other 8.5 rear ends and pretty much any other rear end that might be modified to fit the S strucks.
