G80 Prices and questions.

I found a complete G80 just wondering what a fair price is for one. Is there a better option out there? Or would this be the easiest way to go rear disk on a first gen?

The truck will have a mildly built sbc, what problems might I run in to with this setup? I have read good and bad things about this rearend, and have searched. I'm just looking for a specific answer to my specific question.

Thanks

Re: G80 Prices and questions.

They usually sell for around $400 around here. The G80 is a Governor Lock, which has some weak parts in it. I've even seen the cases split in two. The Eaton Posi is a much stronger differential, but the Governor Lock might hold up fine for a while if you don't abuse it.

What would you recommend would be the best route to improveing the rearend and upgrading to rear disk then? With out spending an insane amount.

Re: G80 Prices and questions.

yeah I would avoid the G80 IMO and get an LSD, you can find great aftermarket units for $400

Re: G80 Prices and questions.

I prefer the Eaton Posi over all other differentials for a street/strip GM car. They are $445 for the 7.5 rear end. You could get a disc brake rear end with the gear ratio that you want for your truck and install an Eaton Posi in it. That's one option. If you found one that you like with the Governor Lock in it then you could try it. If it breaks then you could install the Eaton. Or you could take the Gov Lock out and sell it and install the Eaton.

no way would i spend 350 on a g80 that will explode. get a torson unit from a ls1 f-body and be done with it. I have 2 one in my WS6 and one in my 94, they say locked while you have your foot in it to where a G80 will unlock at a certain RPM.

Re: G80 Prices and questions.

The Torsen units were installed in 4th gen Camaros and Firebirds with the LS engine. It will be the same G80 code on the RPO tag.

Re: G80 Prices and questions.

I don't know of any factory installed Torsen units in the 8.5 rear end. The only limited slip differentials that I know of that were factory installed in the 8.5 were the Traction Lock, Auburn and Governor Lock.

Re: G80 Prices and questions.

G80 is the code that GM uses for all limited slip differentials in all of their products. If you have a truck then the G80 is a Governor Lock. If you have a car then it can be a Torsen, Auburn, True Trac or Eaton, depending on what car you have and when it was made. G80 only means Governor Lock in a truck.

Re: G80 Prices and questions.

See everything I search I find dozens of opionions. Some people say they will bolt right up some say a 2wd needs a G80 from a 2wd and 4wd from 4wd. Now you are talking about just swaping a different part in to the rear disk housing correct? I'm not extremly familiar with the inner workings of a differential.

I dont want to spend a fortune on the rearend when I'm going frame up on the truck. So what exactly is the best option for a solid rearend with rear disk for a 2wd reg cab short box firstgen? Is there narrowing involved with the swap as well?

Re: G80 Prices and questions.

Go with the original plan for the rear end that you found. Run it until it breaks (it might not ever break) and then fix it with better parts. That's probably the easiest thing for you to do. The 4X4 rear end is wider than the 2 wheel drive rear end, so if you have a 2 wheel drive you will want a 2 wheel drive rear end. If you want to run wheels with a lot of back spacing then the 4X4 rear end will allow you to do this without using wheel spacers.

Re: G80 Prices and questions.

You should read up on the 8.8 explorer rear end swap. It "is the best option for a solid rearend with rear disk for a 2wd reg cab short box firstgen". Can be found at any junkyard, come with great choice of gears, some already come with limited slip carriers, disk brakes...can be narrowed or bolt right in.

Re: G80 Prices and questions.

I narrow the housing for $100. A set of axles can run from $245 to $345, depending on the rear end and axle bearings.

Re: G80 Prices and questions.

Svtzx555 is right. The best rear end for the price is the explorer 8.8. You can re-drill the bolt pattern yourself if you take your time, just read on some of the swaps. You can get just about any combo of gears you want, with a posi and disc brakes and it basically bolts right in. If you were close I could set you up with a GM 8.5. They are very hard to find and usually very expensive, where the explorer is all over and cheap by comparison. The 8.5 only came in a 4.3 5spd with the optional rear end, mostly Blazers, but the still have a weak posi and needs to be swapped. Unless your really talented, you probably don't want to attempt swapping out center sections and re-setting up gears. Most people charge about $200 - $300 to set up gears. Just read on the explorer swap and find the gears you want and buy that rear and be done.
