Fluid & shifting

Truck is a '95 S10 2.2L with a 5-speed standard shift, which transmission fluid do I use, a synchromesh fluid or mercon (forgot which one the store said, I think III)?

Also, I have never driven a newer stick shift until now, but is it normal to NOT be able to shift into first at higher speeds? I like to cruise w/ the clutch in while in first (for instance, when I'm rolling up to a red light) but it will not allow me to shift into first any speed above ~25 mph

Re: Fluid & shifting

Use the Dexron auto trans fluid in that transmission. That shifting sounds normal.
