I am totally new here and got my hands on a nice 87 S10. But it has a auto trans which is 'ok', but is there a way to make it manumatic without having to to a lot of modding. I don't mind modding but if its going to be a ton of work i will just swap the trans out with a manual and be done with it. Let me you opinion, Thanks.
I had to google what a manumatic is, so for anyone else wondering like I was, it is an automatic trans with a manual shifting gate that works sort of like a sequential manual trans, bump it forward and back to shift one gear at a time and more importantly, hold that gear till its changed.
that type of trans is really just a fancy shifting program in an electronically controlled transmission, popular in the 00s and 10s. I cant think of a rwd application that has been made that fits any motor in an 87 s10 (Iron duke? 2.8? 4.3?), the only car that would have had something like that is the camaro/firebird and I dont remember a trans like that. your 87 is a mechanical trans, operating on vacuum and cable, so you cant add the programming.
there are sequential manual transmissions that are manual transmissions with servos and electronic dual clutches, even more complicated. again, I cant think of an application besides the corvette, which wouldnt swap over anyway, or the newest camaros. a quick search shows a Gear Vendor application to turn a GM 4 speed electronic trans into a manumatic. sounds cheap haha.
long story short, I dont think it has been done and I think it would be very difficult to do, just because they never made that trans for a rwd application or if they did it would be cheaper just to buy and drive the car it came in.
