4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
I have a 94 s1o 2.2 with a 4l60e transmission, when i bought the truck it acted like it wasnt starting out in 1st and it wouldnt go into OD.
the other day i got to messin with it i remove and replaced the ECM fuse, and worked on some vacuum lines and the transmission shift fine , started in 1st and changed into OD right on time. after about 40 miles, open road and in town, I was pulling away from a stop sign and it started shifting wrong again, no 1st no OD,has code 83.Has 119,000 miles. Is this electrical or vacuum or what? sure could use some advice Thanks |

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
do you manually upshift it to get 2nd gear?
if you do, the trans is going to limp mode, or plain losing power. if you have only 2nd in third in the drive position, then you ahve a bad shift solenoid, and those are easy to replace, and do both of them. |

no I put it in OD it starts out in 2nd, Ive thought about changing the solenoids, I just cant understand why it worked fine the other day, and then quit like it did, also i've changed the solenoids on my sons 98 s10 and it didn't do any better after I changed them.iv tried changing gears manually but it still wont go into first or OD, Ill probaly change out the solenoids but was trying to see if maybe could be something else..but i do appreciate the advice Ill take all i can get

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
How did you make out? I have the exact same problem. What really bites is I just bought the truck yesterday and it was fine. It seems fine when the truck is cold, but within ten minutes, no 1st, and no OD.
Thanks |

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
change the solenoids, but take the pan off the right way, buy dropping the crossmember on the passenger side. you pry the pan out, you will break the solenoids.

ok nevermind. I must have skipped over where it said shift solenoid. How much would it cost to replace these and how big of a job is it?

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
what year?
93-94 have 5 solenoids 2 shift, one 3-2 downshift, a force motor and a tcc solenoid that is part of the harness 95 has 6 solenoids 2 shift, a 3-2 ,a tcc pwm a force motor, and a tcc solenoid. on the 95 the 3-2 is also a pwm solenoid. 96 also have 6 solenoids, but the 3-2 solenoid went to an on /off style. the 2 you need are the shift solenoids. and the reason for taking the crossmember all the way off, is because you pry the pan past the trans mount bracket on the crossmember and it ends up breaking the shift solenoids off. can we make this a sticky so i dont have to keep reposting? please? |

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
My closest dealer told me there was 3 shift solenoids and 1 other solenoid. The total for these was $140. Lucky me, I have 1 extra! Now when I got in there there were only 2 shift solenoids, plus the other one, but the reward of your tranny working the way she's supposed to after you did the repair, rather than some hack who calls himself a tranny builder ( I got burned for $500, even though I told him what to do) is pricelesss!. When you've got advice from a seasoned pro like Deeze, it's like having dessert when your testing!

99 same as 96. just a deep pan instead of a flat one.

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
I have a 2000 Sonoma,101,000mi on it and I am getting harsh shifts from 1st to 2nd and at times it wont go into overdrive. This usually happens after it is warmed up and driven a few miles. I changed the fluid and filter last year but it made no difference. Does this sound like shift solenoids or a control valve body?

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
I have had the same problem my transmission will go into 3 in drive and overdrive if I manually shift it into second it will go into second. I have no first or forth gear. I also will not shift from three into two after upshifting. I have replaced all the solenoids and am still having the same problems. It also has new pump seals and torque converter. All fuses are good. Transmission shop says they have no idea without tearing it down and costing a small fortune. It was working fine until I had someone replace the seals due to a leak. Any ideas on what it could be??????

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
if you put the trans in OD, does it start out in limp mode?
heres what ya do..... pull pan back off, the solenoids in the back both have a common red wire, you MUST have 12 volts on these with the key on. im thinking you have a bad ignition switch. if they have 12 volts, page me. |

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
when you say ignition switch like where the key goes, now is that going to be easier than taking the pan off, if so i would rather just put a new switch in
yes it is starting out in limp mode thanks james |

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
not the key cylinder, the actual switch. and these run about 105 bucks thru the dealer, or a delco dealer. and you can mess it up really easy by trying to put the key in ignition contact in wrong. if you dont have the little inverted torx bit for the top screw its a PITA. best bet, take it somewhere, and have them do it. no broken switch.
the only thing im concerned about it the tcc code. if you clear codes, and just turn the key on, does the check engine light come back on? |

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
does anyone have a picture of where the shift solenoids are inside the trans when you have the pan off. im starting to develope a similar problem. but mine starts out in 2nd gear some of the times and then it doesnt like to shift into 3rd. my mechanic said it was more than likey the shift solenoids and replacing the pressure manifold switch wouldnt hurt while i was in there. i changed the fluid and filter about three months ago with no results. does it sound like solenoids?

Re: 4L60E no 1st or OD sometimes
im having diffrent but same problems..i did the center console shifter conversion added a secondary cooler and changer the fluid and filter now my truck is screwed up..it starts out slow and takes awhile to get going..the tranny doesnt slip but takes alot more gas to get her goin..then at say 50 it feels like it drops a gear then up shifts then drops then up..and reverse seems to go in and out or a weird bucking if you may..any thoughts on that??? im totally lost
