Question 26 & 28 Spline axels

hey everybody i got a 82 s10 with a 305, soon too be 350 but i was wondering if you could help me out. i am ordering a locker for the stock 7.5 rear end. they have the option of the 26 or the 28 spline axles, i was wondering if i could swap my 26 spline axels for the newer 28 spline axles so it will be that little bit stronger
Thanks

so long you get teh same length axles you can go from 26 to 28 splines.

Re: 26 & 28 Spline axels

Are you talking about a Power Trax locker? If you are then the 28 spline locker will not fit in the 26 spline differential case. You will have to get a 28 spline case along with the 28 spline axles. The axles are a direct fit, as long as the length is the same. I recommend the Lock Right over the No-Slip. I know people who have had problems with the No-Slip.

When you are looking for a case be sure to remove the gears and inspect the inside of the case for wear. If you get one that has been abused by one wheel burnouts then the locker might not work. If the case is worn on the inside where the axle gears go then the clearance between the drivers and couplers will be too much and the locker won't work right.

Yes. Be sure that it's the right series for the gear ratio that you have. The 7.5 rear end uses a 2 series for 3.08 to 2.41 gears and a 3 series for 3.23 to 4.10 gears.

Re: 26 & 28 Spline axels

I'm hoping for some valuable insight. My shop is next to an engine shop. So i get the idea to make big power out of my 4.3. The engine will be making about 250hp (estimated). I have a GU6 rear. 7.625" ring. 28 splines as you guys know. It will have a power trax locker in it. Does anyone know if this rear-end can withstand frequent drag strip launches. Is the rear strong enough to keep for racing and street use?

Should be strong enough for 250 HP. I'm assuming that it's an automatic transmission.

Re: 26 & 28 Spline axels

7.5/7.625 rearends are used in our trucks and f-bodys...zx9rgreen just recently busted his stock G80 but not his ring gear/pinion...He's got 400RWHP...there are f-bodys that have the same HP using Drag Radials and not breaking the stock rears...But then again it is a hit or miss...You can always get a Stronger rear cover and weld the tubes to the center section to help with ring gear deflection..I'm sure you won't have to much of a problem with 250HP....

Re: 26 & 28 Spline axels

is there any way to tell if a truck has 26 or 28 spline axle shafts w/o pulling it apart? i wasted today at the salvage yard, and came home empty handed. i have a 92 with 26 spline in it.
