Depends on how its wired.

A 40-amp per unit, or an 80-amp for both units tied to common power.
Make sure your wire is heavy enough to support the amp draw / power load.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Yet another satisfied customer. Thanks Lance. Helped me out a lot, and definitely can tell you are big on your customer service. After placing my order with you today, I plan on only going through Viair for my compressor needs. Heck maybe some day soon I will be upgrading from the 380's to the 480's. Just wanted to say thanks and let everyone know that you guys rock.

I remember - got a photo of your compressor for me yet?

While we're at it I'm going to post an image to let people here know what the differentiation is between "older style" and "new style" piston assemblies. Just something I threw together quickly.

It has everything to do with the relief hole in your saddle plate. If mis-aligned, you can break the output shaft of the motor after reassembly, so getting the correct part is VERY important.

those pics of the compressor are awesome Lance! Still trying to get my hands on a pressure switch. If I can just get one..around 145 or so psi I'll be ready to drive again. Lowriderdepot can't sell direct to me either, of course.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

yeah, i spoke to Tom. he gave me a local dealer (actually found a guy like an hour or so from me) of theirs but i cant get that shop on the line. Honestly, I'm sure the shop he gave me is still in business but he's out in the middle of nowhere and I'm not too sure with the economy (especially rough around here) that he's in the shop very often. Dude, I'm telling ya dude, there's not too many guys/gals around here working on an airbagged truck. I'm still looking though.

Same as any warranty claim.

- Email or fax a copy of your dated receipt that includes your shipping address and telephone number to us.
- We'll issue an RGA number.
- Number goes on the outside of the box you ship the unit back in.
- Ship the unit to VIAIR, 15 Edelman, Irvine, CA 92618

- Once received, its typically a 10-day turnaround to going back out the door. If the warranty claim is invalid - meaning that it was abuse - and not a manufacturing defect - then we'd call to find out payment information for parts, labor and shipping.

Units retain the rest of their original warranty or a 30-day warranty after service - which ever one is greater in duration.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Lance, I have a question for you. Have you ever had one of your gauges leak internally? Ive got a dual needle one that I think is doing so. I have checked the fittings on the back with windex and theres no leaks there. The gauge is in my center console and if I lay down and put my ear to the gauge face it I can hear it hissing. I have even gone as far as pulling the air line out of the ptc fittings and re-cutting them to be sure its a good straight cut. Its been in the truck for about two years and hasnt leaked at all untill recently...

I would imagine that its possible. The internals are typically brazed together. Over time, with movement the brazing could crack and a leak could develop. Unfortunately, since its well past its warranty period - you may have to replace the gauge.

The best thing to do is to get it handled when we first talk about it. Otherwise, we have to start all over again. I'll be honest here: its been so long and I have so many PMs on this site, that I can't even remember what issue you were having in the first place.

Either way, I'll do what I can to help out.
Remember, you have a year from the date of purchase to obtain a warranty inspection on your compressor(s).

Be safe out there!

Understand....guess we will have to start all over when I get back. I was the one who got the wrong parts to rebuild my 450's and when I inspected them upon dissasembly...I noticed one had issues with the walls all scratched and the piston head messed up. I was going to get pictures of everything for you but the movers packed everything of mine so no go on picts. Everything is in storage waiting for me when get back from the desert.

I will hit you back up for sure when I get back for sure Lance. Thanks for the help bro!

Why would my pressure switches be failing? i just got one from sd and right out the box it doesnt cut off when it is supposed to. and this isnt the first time its done it. i can take either wire off the switch and it cuts off, i swap em aroound and it still doesnt cut the comps off.

Is your system wired properly? BOTH wires of a two-prong pressure switch are hot, meaning + wires.

When you visit the site, go to the link on the right side (On Road). That's where you will find the 380C and 480C products. These are air suspension focused products that you will not find in the Off Road section.

100% - ALWAYS!

Its not just the heat, its also the need for a check valve to keep high pressure off of the head of the compressor. Without a functioning check valve, the compressor will pull higher amperage at startup, causing you to blow fuses. Repeated operation in this manner may also damage the compressor motor.

Quick questions... how many compressors are wired to each relay?
What kind of relay(s) are you using?

Typically, the only reason a pressure switch goes this fast is from too much amperage being passed through it on a daily basis.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

I ordered a 380 200 psi compressor off of the suicide doors website. I currently have a 380 installed on my truck now with is front and back bagged and also which has train horns. I ordered a bigger air tank and want to hook both compressors up to it. Do you have a diagram of how to hook up to compressors. Would I need to get two pressure switches or could I just use one? Could I wire the 2nd compressor into the existing compressors wiring harness? And also what is the size of the leader hose that comes with the 380 compressor? 1/2" ? I want to make sure the hose will screw into the water trap I am ordering.

How many gallons will you be filling total? Maximum storage for each compressor is 5 gallons, but with the rigors of air suspension use, I've always rated each compressor at 2.5 gallons to make sure your system lasts as long as possible.

As long as you use relays, you can safely use a single pressure switch. Please see this wiring diagram PDF: http://www.viaircorp.com/OnRoad/Schematics/dualc_wd.pdf

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

The tank I will be using is a 9 port 5 gallon tank. I figure with two compressors that will help fill the tank easier and put less wear on the single compressor I have right now. Is the leader hose where it would hook into a water trap 1/2" in diameter? Thanks for the diagram, that will prove usefull when installing them.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Leader hoses on 380C is 1/4-inch NPT. You will have to use an adapter. The hose is more than adequate for the flow provided however.

ok that will work out good because the tank I am getting has three 1/4 ports. Are most Viar compressors 1/4" NPT? I thought the one I have is 1/2" but I may be wrong.

There are no 1/2" fittings on any VIAIR compressors at this point in time. All are either 1/4" or 3/8".

If you wanted to polish or chrome it for show use, the metal filter housings are great. If you happen to break a metal air filter though - they're kind of a pain to get out of the front cover to replace. I always use the plastic filters - they're easy to replace (and cheaper too).

Nothing is difficult to do, if you watch what you're doing while disassembling what you're working on. Rather than sell you a complete rebuild kit that may have parts in it that you don't need, you will need to do a tear down and inspect the compressor.
Areas of interest that you will be looking for:

Leader Hose:
Pull the leader hose off and pressurize both directions. It should only flow in one direction. If it flows both ways, you need a new check valve. Check swivel and complete hose for any leaks.

Intake/Exhaust Valves:
Pull the head off and look at the valve on top of the piston and on the saddle plate to see if they are bent, cracked or have fallen apart. These should be the only reasons that the compressors may appear to be flowing "backwards".

Piston Assembly/Cylinder Wall:
Inspect the piston seal and cylinder wall for damage, cracks, and scoring. If any of the above is found - you will need to replace them. Keep in mind that you will almost always want to replace the cylinder wall if the piston seal is damaged due to scoring on the bore of the cylinder wall.

As with all repairs, start with the cheapest fixes first. The outline above follows the steps to starting with the most likely problems, and leading to the most major.
