Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Damn...you mounted that compressor real close to your rear wheels. Why not move it around to a different location so you dont need to mod the compressor any?

Mount it farther back where? A little farther back and there's the frame support/old leaf spring mound Or move it farther back and then its right on top on top of the bumper bracket and the bag support.

It is the only open area to put the compressor even close to the tanks.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

i got the compressor mounts from lance, and welded 1x2 to the back of them so it wasnt an issue with the old leaf spring mount on the frame. It worked out great, would reccomend it to anyone.

p.s. you think those 450s are nice on a 5gal try dual 480s? i didnt know air could be so fast. should slow down when i add my second five gallon.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Well I just got a free compressor mount that's in the mail so I might have to try that. Thanks. Although I do like to say I have a remote compressor intake that shielded from water

oh and its 6gal, I forgot my own tank setup lol 2-3gals

Purplepimp

Your setup looks very well thought out. Good on you for using water separators (nice U-bolt BTW), and having the tanks mounted properly. If you can fine a small box of some kind that you can run the air filters into, that would be best. Since you're in California, you don't get crazy amounts of wet weather, but you still run the risk of drawing water into the compressor with the filter exposed the way it is. If you can, route both filters to a place that is clean and always dry. Otherwise, my only other reservation is having the compressor so near the tire. If something were to happen with your suspension, at least one of your pumps is going to take one for the team...

Aren't you worried about kicking something up with the tires and damaging your braided line or the compressor? I realize the margin for that happening is slim, but as the saying goes, 'shit happens'.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

I would be more worried about burning a tire with a Hot compressor head after laying a truck out. If it works for you then more power to you!

I would worry about the fitting on the head of the compressor cracking before the braided line giving way. But yea in the chance s mething happends there are 2 compressors and both have check valves before the tanks so it wouldn't empty my air supply. But if both get taken out at the same time chances are the truck would be damaged to the point of not drivable and that would be a hell of a "act of god" that it shouldn't be on the road that day

Its not that close to the tire to do anything like that and besides tires are used to heat while driving, especially under hard driving. You would have to have the head within an inch and the tire not moving and it Might cause a reaction.

It's probably just the picture angle. It may look closer to the tire than it actually is.

Have you ever done anything to the compressors? -Any rebuilds or replacement parts?

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Got my parts...not happy Lance. I know you have done alot to make this right and I appreciate it but the ends are the same except they have some capacitors added to it. The bearing is still inside the end and will not work with my compressors. What can you do to make this right for me please? I would like to not pay to send stuff back again please if at all possible.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

At some point, we will run out of the old style carbon brush kits / rear covers. That's when people will have to remove their bearings, and use the newer style rear covers. As long as you do not damage the commutator when you remove the bearing from the tailshaft, you should be able to retrofit the newer style rear cover just fine.

Alright well here is whats up lance. Got both the bearings off of the compressors using a 3 jaw puller. Everything came out ok and I did a full inspection on both the compressors. The one that I showed picts of that looks like it needed cleaning was caused due to water getting into the system. The water or whatever leaked from the leader hose back into the system which caused the piston head to rust and the cylendar head to rust out bad. So here is what I need lance...I need a new Wall/Piston head rebuild kit if possible. The wall that the head rides on is scratched up really bad. Other compressor is good to go. I also need the very tiny black O ring that is installed on the front of the compressor that the outer housing and motor assembly meet up at (2 of them please). I will get some picts later on for you. Thanks bro!

well the part that is rolled before the threads is too big to even catch a thread in my smc watertrap and my 1/2 smc check valve lets it fall in it like a hotdog in a hallway. so what gives

I have no idea, VIAIR didn't build the SMC parts. Are you sure that both parts are NPT and are the same port size?

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

well i have 2 480s and one fits and the other doesnt .and they seem to be the same size until i look down the check valve side it looks like the brass side didnt sit in the same spot or its bigger also the onr that works its tip can go inside the other but the treads look the same . i can plainly see that the rolled end is bigger .any idea on the die i would need to atempt to fix it or can the brass piece be pushed in so i can make the taper smaller

It's not going to fit in your 1/2" SMC check valve because the Viair compressors have either a 1/4" or 3/8" leader hose. You'll need to get a reducer bushing to fit them to the check valve.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Lance here are the picts of the head assembly when I took it apart. As you can see water entered the entire system from the hose back into the piston head which caused the head to rust out and rub really bad against the wall it was riding on.

Aluminum cannot rust, so you can clean everything that has rust on it.
You will need to replace the cylinder wall, which is also aluminum but looks scratched.

I always recommend replacing the cylinder along with the connecting rod (piston assembly) each time to make sure that the two parts have the longest possible service life.

Is this just for one of the compressors? Give me a call and we'll get your parts moving your way.

Yes this is just for the one compressor that looked to have water leaked inside the system. The other compressor is good to go but I was wanting to get if possible a new black O ring that mates up from the front head assembly to the actual body itself. Im going to have to give you a call next monday Lance. Payday for me is Friday. Thanks for the help man!

well im glad this poped up again. so anyway my truck sat for two weeks and then i go to pump it up and the comps run. i walk inside and make sure the baby doesnt have a knife or something crazy like she does, pop back outside and no psi? so i assume that its everybodys favorite check valves again since i have had isues with them before. go to pull the one off and snap poooof line breaks behind the check valve so my question is

A. did they fix this, how do i get new lines?

B. did it fry my compressors running into a brick wall like that?

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

i know i had the same problems with my old 450's, i rebuilt them, and bought new leader hoses, both comps crapped out again, i think it was because of the check valves going bad, but whos to say. So with my fancy new 480 dual pack i put some nifty bendix checkvalves from my local truck supply store between the leader hoses and the tank. havent had a problem since. As far as i can tell those check valves are the only weak spot in those viair comps. Its a shame they dont offer something better, but a couple bucks for some beefy check valves and they seem to be working 100%. cant beat the fill time of 2 480s on a 5 gallon tank either!

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Awesome to hear your kicking out such kick ass service Lance! Definatly better than the people at Air Zenith! I have one of their compressors they put out that had the issue with blowing up. Well they gave me a repair order to send it in well it kept having issues so I asked them to help me out to get the damn compressor running being as I was 390 bucks into a compressor between buying it and shipping it and it keeps screwing up. They said I needed to upgrade to their “new and improved“ version. So I said okay how much......another 300 dollars! I told Paul that I'm not investing 300 more dollars into a compressor that hasn't been field proven yet and have it shit on me and be almost 700 bucks into a damn paperweight. So I'm currently running a 380 I got from a friend of mine that looks pretty old on my 5 gallon. He apparently wants it back soon so I'm tryin to save up for a 380 dual pack but with a new born kinda hard haha. So Lance......KUDOS! You have a new lifetime customer. Will definatly be using your products for my truck from now on and when I start my wifes truck it will be rocking the Viair aswell!

Agree on the check valves. I think they came out with a different version not to long ago to fix all the issues though.

Oh BTW...is there anyway someone can make a sticky or something we can openly discuss issues with viair?

We're working on trying to find out how widespread the check valve issue might be. A running change a bit ago, changed the internal spring to stainless steel, which seemed to fix the failure of some of them over time. We don't see this problem very often (when you take into consideration the number of compressors we sell).

TUCNRIM88
As long as the compressors are still running, you're probably okay.
How old are your compressors? (I'm going to replace the hoses anyways, I just would like to know how old yours are).

Please send me a PM with your address, so I can get you a pair of new hoses sent out.

Oh BTW...is there anyway someone can make a sticky or something we can openly discuss issues with viair?

Thats what i was told, but about a week after i put my 480s in i noticed a big air loss overnight, installed the checkvalves, no more air loss. Compressors are a month old tops. Not bitching, everything has a weak point, and if these compressors weak point can be fixed with a 15dollar check valve, thats pretty damn good in my book.

and +1 on the sticky. I see so many new threads of pepole asking where to get rebuild parts its ridiculous.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

dist.'s = ?

If you mean Distributor - we're not one.
VIAIR is a manufacturer... and I don't know why we don't have a specific area. I do know I don't really sell anything but some spare parts here to help guys out...

The pumps are for the Distributors to sell, not me. We want to keep them ALL in business.

regardless i think you should have a section on the forum. there are always questions about the compressors, hooking them up, replacement parts, how-to's, always something. my .02.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Quick question for Lance.

I just bagged the truck 3 months ago with the Viair compressor. The first time I ran the system the compressor seemed to be struggling and was not filling the tank. After a couple times running it started to work just fine... until last night. After taking the leader hose off I discovered the check valve was bad and completely stuck closed. I had to use a nail and a hammer to get the valve to open to get me home. It is the newer style hose with the seperate check valve. Had any issues with these? Also the check is still stuck. I temporarily put a fuel system check valve in its place until I can find another hose cheap.

If the new check valve is working, just leave it there.
What compressor are you running? Do you have the receipt to tell me the part number of the hose you're using?

The newer separate style check valves are not sticking to my knowledge. If I hear otherwise, I'll let you know.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

The new valve is working, but it looks kinda funny since it had to female ends. I adapted with a brass fitting from work to make the one end male. It just looks out of place. I have the Viair 450 which I got in the front kit from suicidedoors.com (the one he posted on here not too long ago)http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f207/p...u-xoxo-353447/. I am sure if I can't find the receipt I can get a copy from Ricky. I ordered the kit from him in February. Installed it the first week of March.

PS - I do know it is the 1/4 Pipe ends.
